Hey guys, here is the deal. One of the local F-Body guys around KC is talking all sorts of crap on my MAV, and now he wants to have a little show down at the track. I am not scared to race him, I am just fairly sure he'll win cause he runs mid 13's supposedly. I know the MAV will run 14.4's and with my improved driving skills and fixed rocker arms I am confident the car can run high 13's. But I want to win....So my answer is to run some NOS. Will running a 100hp shot on a newly rebuilt 302 with cast pistons be ok? We are only talking 2-3 passes max until we rebuild the motor this winter. The engine is freshly rebuilt with about 12 drag passes and about 100 street miles on it. If this would work does anyone have a suggestion on the NOS kit to get? I know the install is not that tough cause I helped a bro do his on a Ford Focus....I was thinking of just calling summit and getting the generic small block kit....your expertise advice is requested......thanks guys.

It would be fine with 100hp if you have a good fuel pump. I can get you a good deal on a NX kit lmk. I just live south of you.
Nosbandit@aol.com email me if you want to talk about it. 100 shot should get you down to 13 flat if you can hook. Put some slicks on it.

NOS = Throttle in a Bottle! YUMMY!

I'd suggest a wet kit if you ever want to go over 100 h.p. (and you will).

Also, as mentioned, you need plenty of fuel to feed the system. At least a 190 lph pump.

Points to ponder - colder plugs, close the gaps a little, test and tune and test and tune some more. 'Hones you're driving skilz and will head off any unexpected surprises.

Get new plugs and check after each run to make sure you're not running fat or lean. You're going to go through a couple sets of test plugs.

I can almost gaurantee you he won't win --- if you ram him off the starting line! ;)

Good luck and keep us posted,

    Rick

I'm running a 125 hp shot w/ cast pistons for about the last 12 years, no problems. Using NOS Super Power Shot and a Jacobs Nitrous Mastermind, protects the engine and allows the nitrous to come on sooner. As mentioned above, if your going to use a mechanical fuel pump, use a good one. As some of the other guys that raced at Roundup know, I had fuel pressure problems and the Jacobs unit didn't allow the nitrous to come on. Couldn't race to full potential but didn't hurt the motor either. Just installed a new Edelbrock Performer street pump, very nice and everything is back to normal. But now I have to wait a whole 'nother year to try it again on a track. :( Use 93 or 94 octane gas and retard the timing w/ under 150 hp shot and you usually don't have to worry decreasing plug gaps or colder plugs. Have fun!

    Not "NOS"

Okay…. sorry I just had to stick my two sence in on this one. I own a NX - Nitrous Express System works great and if you hook things up right like the above guys said good fuel pump, colder plugs maybe some kind of fuel management system and other safety features it should run fine.

Ok but hears my beef….. Now I own a NX, N20 kit however this is what I hear all the time Just I hear time at track and car shows…. " Look he's got NOS!" Wow look NOS!" "NOS that the stuff in the 2fast2furious" which makes me want 2fast2barf!

Sorry to say but "NOS" is a brand not the product. "NOS" stands for Nitrous Oxide Systems now branded by Holley.. N2O is nitrous, in fact no nitrous company sells N2O to the public. NOS, NX, ZEX, Compucar, Venom etc…. there are all kits. I'm sure if you have been reading the past few Car Crafts they been on this topic for a while. I'm sure someone could say that yeah they are all Nitrous Oxide Systems however when you say NOS that's a brand. Maybe it's just a beef I have.:p

All I have to say is the first guys at "NOS" did right just like the guys at Klennex (Tissue Paper), Xerox (photocopy), BandAid (shoot I can't even remember what the heck they are really called) and Jello (Gelatin)…. Get my drift now… Don't let it happen 2u.

Here here Maverickman . I agree . It is called Nitrous to us older guys . I am sick of all those 2fast2dumb names for something thats been around for 20 years

The only thing I would like to add if you are gonna use "NITROUS" is make sure your total timing is no more than 34,35 BTDC .If bad things happen like loss of fuel pressure at least you wont start making craters on your pistons . I think you should be able to go with a mechanical pump as long as it is a good one .

    My 3 cents

I know the difference... as my sig should suggest I am living in both worlds, sport compact and muscle car, and I can understand MaverickMan's frustration. I guess I should have said I need N20 instead of NOS. Right now it looks like I am going to go with a NX Hitman Plus system and run a 100hp jet. I'll probably go with one stage colder plugs and run the highest octane pump gas I can find, which in KS is 92.... I should have the system sometime next week I hope and I officially chalenged the F-body dude to a grudge race, so I'll keep this post going and hopefully be smoking some camaro ass....Peace

Note to self: M.A.V. does not play well with others.

    Such anger!
