I need some help form you guys that have done the inner fender panel replacement at battery box and washer bottle. I know these areas are attached with both bolts and spot welds. What would be the best way or the proper way to break the spot welds. I do not want to damage the parts that I have. I have a good set that I cut from a donor car, just about 1/2" from joint towards the shock tower including the radiator support and tips of lower frame as one unit. Also could you tell me if it is better to keep the unit together including the radiator/core support and install as one unit or is it easier to install just the panels themselves. Any tips/guidance is greatly appreciated. Thanks Allen Small
A spot weld cutter can be found at your local Harbor Freight if you have one near by. I don't know if the parts stores carry them or not. Maybe even a Lowe's or Home Depot might carry them???? The one shown above is from www.eastwoodco.com (the site was down other than that pic as of this post). Also, you can use a ball-peening hammer and pointed punch (a center-punch isn't the bestest as the weld itself goes through a heat-treatment of sort during the fusion process and hardens). Follow up with a good carbide tip drill bit (1/4" - 5/16"). That'd be my .02 worth (especially since I recently went through a similar operation on mine). Good luck and keep us posted, Rick
Inner femder panel replacement Rick, Thanks for your input on the spot weld cutter information. I will check out. I'll also keep you guys posted on the process. currently gathering all parts and info before work starts. Thanks again. Allen Small
Another western pa mav, cool!! the spot weld cutter would be the best way, and they are surprisingly easy to use, but defiantly be sure to use some sort of cutting oil, it will help the cutter last longer and make your cuts smoother. I just used one to cut the cowl panel off of my 69.5 mav.. good luck, keep us posted...
