I am contemplating the purchase of a 1972 Comet that has some interior issues. Front seat upholstery (bench) needs to be replaced. Trim code HF medium ginger. Is anything available? Also, the seller has a new headliner as the original needs to be replaced. I have heard that the windshield as well as the back window need to come out to do the job correctly. Is this true? Thanks
Front and rear glass need to come out to do a headliner the right way. This is because the headliner is glued to the pinch weld. When I did headliners I used about a 100 of those spring clips used for office papers when stretching the material into position and then gluing the pinch weld a little at a time to keep the tension on the fabric.
Here is a picture from one of my cars that might help you understand what I was trying to say ........ couple days of stretching out to get rid of all the wrinkles and then gluing to the pinch weld
I use wind lace cutting in pieces is like you have your weather strip on come out perfect here some pictures of my own Installation easy job and yes better to remove the windshield and rear glass for a better job
I used the spring clips also. the sail panels were the hardest for me to get wrinkle free. the little toothed clips at the bottom aren't the best to help stretch the headliner. don't loose the springs to the back bow. the rods are color coded so keep them in order (front to back). when pulling the windshield keep track of the little stands (2-3) for the glass. they are at the bottom and are sometimes buried in the sealant.
... all good advice, a warm day at install helps also. Yes the windows are supposed to come out for pinch weld fold-over and glue correctly. IF your resources or talents prevent window R&R, a trim can be added after careful gluing. didn't remove F & R windows on my early Comet. and garage seal cove foam was used as trim. . . . hav e fun
