I have a 72 mav 4 dr sedan with am radio. Im trying to put in a stereo and I jus removed the stock radio. It was connected by two connecter with 2 black wires going into one and 2 light blue with red stripe and 2 white with purple stripe wires going into the second connecter. I need help on how to continue

Go to www.maverickcomet.com and look under features and wiring diagrams.

The only wire that would possibly be reused is for the dial light. Doubt you have plans to use the existing speaker in the center of the dash.

As Maverick1970 stated...I doubt you will be re-using the factory dash speaker, so you will need to run all new speaker wires to your new speakers.

The 2 black wires with the hash marks are for the center speaker. The blue with red stripe is for the nightime face illumination. ( works in conjunction with the instrument and heater control illumination ) The white with purple stripe is B+ when either the ignition or accessory is turned on. :D

As long as you use NONE of these for the ground....you will be ahead of the game. It is amazing how many times I have seen one of those wires used as a ground....even professional installations.

I know what you mean! Some folks just think black automatically means ground. They would be rudely awakened if that was tried on residential home wiring!

Ok so pretty much new wires. I assumed that much. Im at the wiring part. Are any of those wires a power wire I can use or any of them as the remote turn on. Im trying to install a alpine d100 or sonethin like that abd its currently got a wiring harness for a Chrysler on it. Does that not matter sibce id be manually connecting wires

Most modern stereo gear wants two power leads, a constant one so that you keep radio and clock presets, and a switched lead to turn it on and off with the ignition key.

Tapping the lead that goes to the cigarette lighter is a great source for the constant power.

You can use the existing power lead for the switched source.

As far as running your rear speaker wires goes, a really clean way to do that is under the passenger side sill plate. There is a channel there (don't know about 4 doors, but they likely connect). I also have a rear amp, and ended up making my own loom for all of it, cable-tied every few inches, etc.

And its that simple. Ive never done one these manually. When you say tapping into the cig loghter. What would be the best way to approach, cutting and wiring in the stereos wire. Or trying to splice it in

And the exisiting power wires you say to use are white with purple stripes I believe was stated, there 2 of them going into a pin, would I use both at the pin or cut and use one or the other?

Those two white with purple wires must stay together. The blue with red stripe wires ( if there are two ) must also stay together. I just got a plug from the junkyard to connect my new radio to. That way you don't have to cut and splice stuff! There is a connector that you can put on the cigarette lighter socket that just plugs on and the original wire plugs back into it. That will be the constant power for the radio's memory. The adapters are available in most auto parts stores. :)

If you don't plan to use the cigarette lighter, simply unplug it. There is a terminal that clips onto a protruding bolt on the lighter. Find a matching male terminal and use that to connect things.

Also, if splicing wires, soldering gives the best long-term results. Twist the wires together, heat the wires until the solder melts through from the opposite side of the twist from the iron. Cover with heat shrink tubing. Toughest part is to remember to have the heat shrink on one wire before spicing them.

Question, the two black wires for the center speaker should be different? One is black and the other is black with white hash marks. Which one is positive. I'm quite sure polarity is important for the speaker to run correctly.
