How do I put in a kill switch (required at my track for drag racing) and install a stereo so that it doesn't lose it's memory (clock, channel, and EQ settings) every time it is "killed"? Or, is there a stereo that has an internal battery that will retain it's settings?
I'v seen a deal called a "memory saver" that plugs into a cigarette lighter. I think it uses a 9 volt battery. You might be able to adapt something like that to the stereo only.
You can run a hot-wire directly from the + Terminal to the Stereo Hot-wire (I'd use an in-line fuse also with the current rated fuse being used). The unit itself should already be grounded - if not, ground to stereo chassis to car chassis with a short ground wire. I can't remember, do you have your battery in the trunk (the reason for Emergency Shut-off)? ref:http://www.nhra.com/contacts/tech_faq.html If I'm wrong, somebody please correct me.
Scott, your stereo should have one red wire and one yellow wire. The red wire goes to a switched power source (ignition switch), the yellow one goes to a continuous power source. Run the yellow wire to the positive terminal on the battery with a fuse and your good to go.
Battery is currently in trunk. No kill switch yet, maybe pick one up today. But it has to kill the entire car, so I guess I would have to run a separate wire all the way back to the battery. I was hoping there was another way. I figured that there might be a stereo that had a battery backup, like the computer has to keep the BIOS configuration memorized and clock running when the computer is off and/or unplugged.
use the mem wire on your radio. run a new wire or jumper one off of a fuse to get voltage. make shure you are on a fuse that stayes hot after the key is off or the switch is off eather way. not a lot is neaded so it can be small wire just use a in line fuse after whatever you get your power from.
