Well it seems the mav is giving me signals... time to get rid of iit!!.... everythign was fine untill all of a sudden tons of things go wrong.

    1. transmission is screwed up.
    2. Heat switch broke
    3. Turn signal lever doesnt turn anythign on.
Worst problem: My car takes about 10 minutes to start in the morning.
First turn of the key, it starts real loud for 1 second then shuts off, next turn, it sputters so slow and quite, u can barely tell the car is on, and it is spitting out white smoke from exhaust (some kinda gasket leak?)
Turnt hekey again.... it starts and after runnign for about 10 seconds it starts to sputter hard, like its on then off then on then off .....after it does that for awhile i can shut off then star....then it will finally start.
(the only time the white smoke comes from exhaust is during the slow quite sputter)

Also, since its been startign to do this sputter and not start, ive been smelling a very strong gas smell.

    Can anyone help?!?!?!

    Its a 302 automatic.
    (was also thinkin its flooding?)

Yup...floats stuck on the carb or needles or clogged...hit the carb with a wooden or rubber mallet...worked wonders for me:bananaman

Sounds like you have several different malfunctions all at the same time. I'd check the connection to the coil for the tach. The turn signals sound like it could possibly be at the fuse block. On both of my '76s I had problems with a white film breaking contact with the fuses. I cleaned off the contacts in the fuse block and it cured several problems. The starting problem does sound like carb. I agree with the sticking float.

I'd rather have one car with several problems than what I've been dealing with this week....my '97 having bad u-joints, my '90 with a bad drive shaft, the 4 door Mav needing a thermostat and an upper rad hose, her '95 needing brakes and shocks badly. I feel like a fleet mechanic on a bad day.

You'll get it together with the Mav. this is what happens to older cars regardless of how you baby them. Just take each individual problem one at a time and start simple. It'll fall together.

Well, believe it or not, I took the day yesterday off and everything is fixed.

As to your dilemna, your problems don't sound that extensive. Transmissions are cheap for our cars and are plentiful. Your other problems can be fixed without major problem and probably without major $$$. They require some time devoted, but I wouldn't use them as a reason to get rid of it.

    Hit the carb?

    With wood or rubber mallet?

    ?????????????????????????

Guys, that is what you do when you
are trying to get home from the grocery
store. IF your float is hanging, see about
    having the carb rebuilt.....

...so that you won't be standing on the side of the
road at a stoplight trying to fix it in the dark next
    week.

    Best of luck.

    Seth.
