bone yard close by has 2 mavericks,,one comet and one pinto.
i have 74 cometGT3 speed and looking to buy a spare rear..im not sure of the ratio of my rear..325??? my question is ..are the automatic 6 and automatic 8 cyl cars the same 279 ratio???? am i even close??? would i be satisfied with automatic rear in a 3 speed car 302 application or will i have to slip the clutch with the automatic rear...previous owner had 15 inch tires/rims on the rear for a little better gas mileage????HELP!!! thx in advance for info!

You can guess close on ratio, make a mark on hub or tire and mark on driveshft, count times driveshaft turns to 1 revolution of tire or hub,if memory is right usually a six cyl. had a higher ratio than a v-8< 3:35 to 2:40>higher ratio easier to move from start, bad on gas milage

I had to ride the clutch with a 3.00 gear in my Falcon. I have to pedal the clutch to get a roll going with a 3.25...this is with a 24.5" tire on a 350-400 lbs lighter car than a Maverick. 3.00 was the lowest 8" gear in a Maverick. The 7.25" could be 3.20:1

8" rears only came in 2 flavors for Maverick/Comets...
2.79 and 3.00, no matter auto or manual. They were equally available.

If I were you, I'd get one Maverick rear for a backup and look under the Pinto.
If it has an 8", it will have a good gear. They only came with 3.40 or 3.55 in Pintos.

    Edit:
I suppose to answer your question, either 2.79 or 3.00 will feel the same when switching from one to another.
I can't tell the difference anyway...

Look at the tag on the rear. It is under the car, attached to one of the bolts holding in the chunk on an 8".
There will be either a '2' or a '3', with a point (.) right after it.
Then there will be about a 1/4" of blank area, followed by 2 more digits.
Those 3 digits are the ratio.
The blank area between the digits (on cars other than the Maverick) can have an 'L' in it, as opposed to totally blank, and that means "limited slip" or 'posi' to use a popular description. You won't find that on a stock Maverick though, they never had the 'posi' option.
You may see it on other Fords though, even a Pinto/Bobcat.
    It'll look something like this...
    3. L 40
    or 3.40:1 ratio, limited slip.

    axle code mav. com.

If i remember correctly..inside the drivers side door jam on the body there is an I.D. sticker , along the bottom of the sticker are several boxes , one of them being the axle code prefix number. number 3 is 279:1 , and number 6 is 300:1 , hope this helps..good luck bri.

The mav is gone but i'm still here!
Actually you could find a track loc under a maverick. There was a thread a while ago where two cars surfaced as to having one(with pictures). Both cars had special order DSOs.... Also check to see if they have mustang IIs. They could be had with lower gears.
