Like said above, 93 in the VIN means it's a Grabber. Also, body code 62D means it's a Grabber Another way to tell is look under the passenger side about mid way under the door (where the arrow is pointing in the 2nd pic). On a real Grabber there will be 62 stamped there. Here's some pics:
Not exactly --- all 2 door Mavericks will have the 62 stamped into the rocker, both standard sedans and sport sedans (Grabber). Drivers side gets that stamping too. 62A was a standard 2dr and 62D was a Grabber 2dr. 54A is a 4 door.
Hmm... I'm pretty sure my '76 nor my '73 have anything stamped there. And I'm pretty sure I originally heard it on here that only grabbers had the stamp there. Ohh well. As always, it's very likey that I'm wrong.
Might be another one of the many "some had it, and some don't" things about the Maverick. I just went out and looked. Both my 72 and my 76 parts cars have the 62 stamp on both the passenger and drivers side rockers. And they are both 62A standard 2 doors.
I have had 2 NOS rocker panels ... both were stamped 62 ... Never noticed if my 74 hasthem or not .. my Grabber definitely does ..
Hi, new here. I have a 1970 Maverick and trying to figure out if it is a Grabber. I am reading very conflicting and confusing info. It has 91 in the VIN, 62 with no letter under the door. What other things make the determination? Thanks for the help, pictures attached.
In 1970, the Grabber was an add on option package late in the run of the 1970 cars. They did not yet have their own VIN different from any other 2 door (62 body code). The hood with the little scoops was only used in 71-72, not 1970. Since it looks like your car has gone through many modifications over the years - the only real way you will know if it was born a grabber, is to get a Marti report. To see what was done to the stock 1970 to make it a grabber, check out Craig's web site. http://maverickcorral.homestead.com/grabberregistry.html
The 62 under the door means nothing to the Grabber, I think it was an easy way to know if it was a rocker panel for the two door. In 70, the Grabber didn't have a specific identification in the VIN from what I have read but I could be wrong. 70 also did not have the Grabber hood, looks like all your sheet metal from the doors forward came from a donor car that was a Grabber. Does the car have a spoiler? I think the Grabber did have the spoiler but again, I could be wrong.
Grabber or Not? I just ran across a Canadian built late '72 Maverick (build date 07/72) and it has all the right stuff to be a real Grabber but the Body Code is a 62A and the VIN is 2X91F329484. Either someone went to a helluva a lot of pains to make a Grabber out of a standard 302 coupe or this thing is an oddball. Has anyone else ever run across one like this?
The 91 in the VIN is what tells you, it was not a factory Grabber. It would be 93 if it was a true Grabber. This applies to all Grabber models EXCEPT 1970 models. There was no VIN designation for 1970 cars. There are many Grabber "clones" out there. Since it was only cosmetic parts, it is easy to recreate one. The Grabber cars have nothing special in the design and build of the car. It is all bolt on parts, paint and decals.
