Today while we were getting tires put on moms car I found a car that I might buy. It is a porsche 944. The car has a real strait body. The sunroof leaks so the interior is shot. The owner wants $300 for it so I am considering buying it and me and dad building a tube frame drag car out of it. We are thinking mustang 2 clip, 355sbc and 9 inch with 4.88's

That would make it a fast Porsche...

I ran across a small block Chevy powered 944 at a car show this past summer......mild built motor, but the car flat screamed, and the owner said it was a blast to drive, and once the rear wheels caught traction, it handled like it was on rails.

Ask if the timing belt, balance shaft belt and water pump have been replaced yet...They have to be done every 30K wether you like it or not and you need special tools to do it.Also make sure the motor mounts are good...every 60K on those.if it needs a clutch...Pass...its a 12hr job to pop the engine out(from underneath) Disconnect the torque tube(driveshaft) and dis mount the trans axle(at the rear of the car) Just to change the clutch...Yes...I have had a few of em.If its a turbo plan on a new one and a waste gate...Good luck!!!
I put a sbc in the last one (talk about re-engineering a car!) If you tube chassis it the problems go away with putting a V-8 in one. They are stupid light though...IIRC...2200 lbs

Yup, nothing eliminates the over-complicated and expensive engineering of a foreign car better than ripping it's guts out and sticking in some no BS American iron/horsepower....

even if it takes a little home-grown engineering to do it! LOL

I figure the motor is junk. The intake says prorsche on it so I am going to clean it and hang it above my bed. I popped the hood and there was a whole bunch crap under there. I believe a v8 would work with stock suspension since the engine bay is way wider than one in a maverick

Engines fit fine...Its the transmission/rear axle where the problems start. Trans tunnel is small and transaxle is under the back of the car.Cut it gut it and tube chassis the thing and all will be right with the world...

    Bowties are for little boys.
Stuff a 351 in it with a built 5 speed and a 9 inch posi. Simple and effective and it avoids the embarrassment of having a GM product powering your nice car.

It might get a sbf. A 5 speed would be fun on the street but horrible for bracket racing. I told dad yesterday I always wanted a porsche but I figured it would be nicer than this. lol

Does this mean the '65 Mustang might get a better motor, maybe a blue one?;)

I could possibly paint a bowtie blue. lol. Honestly the car is way past putting back all ford. if you took all the chevy stuff out all that would be left is a hull with no motor tranny or front suspension
