1973 maverick 6cyl c4 tranny. when you excelerate hard and the tranny down shifts it is making a clunk sound (sounds like it is coming from the back). Cant find the fluid leval check in rear end, seems to be no way to get fluid in rear end. U joints look old but no visable signs of problems.

    Thanks

The fluid fill, check location is on the right side of the pumpkin. Use a 1/2 " rachet to remove the check fill plug. Fluid should be felt with your pinky finger sticking down in the hole, if not add. U-joints can not really be tested with a visual. As cheap as they are, I would replace and see if the problem dissapears. Good luck.

    Clunking

I think you may have some differential problem, excessive wear between the pinion and ring gear will cause the clunk also a bad pinion bearing etc. Jack the one wheel up and rotate back and forth to see how much play there is in the gears. Should not move too much before feeling engagment, also I would first remove the drive shaft from the yoke and check the u joints cups and bearings for wear etc. Grab the yoke and see if it is loose on the pinion splines(common problem). There should be a pipe plug with 3/8 or 1/2 square center on the side of the chunk behind the yoke. Might have to scrape away dirt to find it. Remove and check fluid level with finger, should be to top of plug. Am not sure your trans is at fault on this one, it is kind of like me, when things get old they tend to creak and groan and not work right.:D :D
