    Hi Guys,

I could use some help here. I'm not the most car savy but I'm determined to finish the work my dad started on my Mavwerick. The engine in the car is a 460 out of a Ranchero which is basically stock (See my first post in this forum for pictures). A distant relative (who has a 8 second Camera) recently rode in my Maverick with me. He suggested I upgrade the spark plug wires and get a MSD 6AL.

I went one step further. I bought a new distributor as well as high end spark plug wires and had my mechanic put them in.

I purchased this MSD 6AL (https://www.summitracing.com/parts/msd-6425) and brought it to my mechanic. He told me he does not want to touch the thing. He said he thinks it's going to cause too many problems with the car. He said this is for race specific cars and he thinks it's going to fry the current wiring.

I'm kind of thrown for a loop here. I really thought this product was going to boost the power and performance, and the guy who suggested I buy it really knows his stuff.

My mechanic is a really good friend and he's worked on my cars for years. I know he has my best intentions in mind and I believe him when he says he thinks its going to cause issues. Does anyone have any experience or advice on the matter? Should I just return the thing?

Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Iv had mine in my car since 98. Never had an issue. It's probably not going to boost power unless you have really high compression or a power adder. My reason for having one is the Rev limiter.

Kinda depends on what it has now, what year is engine??? If it's a '68-'71 engine the high compression ratio would probably benefit from hotter spark...

I have a Street Fire system on my Comet, that produces probably 5x the spark of points or a early electronic system... Never drove it with the orig points system so I dunno just how much improvement it makes... On my 428 the Crane Hi-6(similar to MSD) I installed probably 20 years ago really helps with cold and low speed performance and is yet to "break up" at higher RPMs as it would with points...

The MSD wont hurt your electrical system. Just make certain it has 12 volts going to it and a very good ground. If your engine actually has some compression...10:1 or better. The engine will benefit from it. Other wise, it wont hurt anything. Some mechanics dont want to mess with an MSD box. They dont understand em and many think they are too touchy and easy to break...Not true as long as its installed properly. Just follow the installation directions, and it will serve you well for a long time.
