Hey again everyone. Got everything back together on my car and....still not enough power (will it ever be enough?)! Anyways, i was considering an electric fan or an electric fuel pump. I have no power steering so i'm slowly but surely removing everything my engine has to drive. Which would make more of a difference, the fuel pump or the fan (i have a fan clutch, which helps a little)? My other question is whether i can use an electric fan with the vertical flowing radiators. I have a three row, and no A/C. How many CFM would i need? Would i need a pusher and a puller, or just one big puller? Any other suggestions for freeing up more power?
Bigger cam with better heads and NOS will shurely bring up the POWER ! Electric fuel pump is a good place to start , a good puller at 1200 CFM + would keep it cool . What has been done to your engine so far???:confused: Richard
RAM CHARGERS has a few low-priced fans. Call em up at 1-888-293-7267. They can probably help you determine what fan to use for your application. Also, I believe there are other fans from newer cars you can get from the salvage yards. I'd check with them also. I bought the dual speed-dual fan, pn 674001 (shown below) for my larger radiator (out of '90 Mustang). I had to do some modifying to get it to fit flush, but it should be plenty for my app (drag race 347 c.i. which tends to run in the 200+ range, degrees - not MPH's ). I went with the puller type so I could put two in-line tranny coolers on the front of the radiator. Good luck and keep us posted, Rick
I think fans take up more hp than a fuel pump . I have a 14" electric on my car when I go to the track . No problems . But it wont keep up on the street . I have a stock 2 core 302 radiator that was recored recently . Other people that I know with fairlanes and mustangs have no problem . So you can take this information for whatever you think it is worth .Some 302 (for whatever reason ) dont cool as well as others .
Yes Fans do use more horsepower than a fuel pump. Installing an electric fan set up will make a noticable difference when driving the car...Not a big difference,but noticable. An electric fuel pump wont make enough difference to "feel" ,And most of them make a pretty annoying noise while running .
What is the Application The application will dictate what changes are to be made , on a high HP engine it would mean more fuel . On a stock application I would tend to agree with the Electric fan ! Richard
I already did the lumpy cam and aluminum heads, and it makes lotsa power...but there's always room for improvement! I was kinda thinking a fan too...i was just going to get the biggest fan i could find that pulled the most CFM and fit nicely (why buy anything less? i could end up having to buy another one and paying more in the end). I also worry because my fan says it is not rated for more than 4k rpm's and i regularly run it up to 6. Any other suggestions? I wish i had the money to do an electric water pump, but that'll be another day (then i'd only be driving the alternator, wouldn't that be nice?).
Here is the coolong set Up I`m running...It keeps it below 195 even when sitting in stop and go traffic during 98 degree days.
Moroso makes a neat little electric motor for you stock water pump. It comes with the belt and pulley, its a cheap and easy way to have a "electric" water pump and I think Summit offers them for about $60.
Hey Rick how was the fit on the 90 Mustang rad? I have one from my doner car and was wondering how it would fit, but haven't really tried it yet. I have the rad packed away. Thanks for the input.
