If that guy accepts this car back then I sincerely hope he has a miserable life from that moment forward.

Why, she was going to sell the car anyway. If it were mine, I'd want it back.

Sorry but I (and evidently the owner of 38 years) don't feel the same as you do on that subject.
If it was stolen from him it should be returned whether it be 38 minutes or 38 years.

He should BUY it from her.

SHE didn't steal it and one would think that it was payed for by insurance in 1970. Now this car, a graduation gift from her father, is going to be taken from her after she loved it for 38 years by a guy who was compensated for his loss 38 years ago. The woman will receive nothing for her 38 years of care while this guy gets the car AND whatever he bought with the insurance settlement all those years ago? She was selling the car, he should get first dibbs and nothing more.

    Not cool to me.

If it where mine i would want it back! In 1967 my had parents had their new 1967 fairlane stolen. It was returned a week later with bald tires and a slipping transmission. Some kids ran the dog ---- out of it. It was never the same. This guy is very lucky. The car was maintained better than he would have maintained it. Im sure that now that its a classic worth several times what it cost new it feels like winning a lottery!

And she is punished for her care of a car that was a gift from her father?
What about this is okay? You guys are looking at this from the guys point of view instead of the cars loyal owner for 38 years who is being ripped off for something she didn't do.

What about all the loot this woman has invested in this car? A gift for the guy whose insurance settled this in 1970?

Lame and nothing makes me think otherwise. This story makes me mad.

Back in the day most cars where not insured . He may not have been compensated. If someone kidnapped your child for 38 years does it make it any less yours.

He should at least offer to buy it off her. He has certainly gotten over it after 38 years while this lady had actually cared for this car for that time. The dealer who sold it in 1970 should be contacted and dealt with if they still exist. I guess that would be out of the question since it's been so long?

If YOUR car came up stolen in 1970 would you be cool with giving it away?
And cars are not children, moot argument.

Exactly. She should at least get something for her care and attention. It was her first car as well as a gift from her father.
He should offer her some money is all I'm saying.

I disagree with the whole premise that he is somehow entitled to this car after 38 years. I realize thats the law but if it were me, I would let her keep it. He's 80 for Petes sake.

If that guy was 42 in 1970 and didn't insure his car then maybe he's a dumba$$.

What would make it right for you? Why should he have to pay for a car that was STOLEN from him? Stolen is stolen, Ray hit it on the head.

I absolutely understand where you are coming from, but that's generally not the way it works. If someone steals a big screen TV, and sells it to you, guess what? It's going to be taken from you and returned to the rightful owner regardless of what you paid for it, or if you knew it was stolen or not.

From what I understand, it was not uncommon for people to go without insurance back then. I don't think it was a law yet. Regardless, the article makes no mention of insurance. If I were that guy, I could see maybe just letting it go if she had planned to keep the car forever. But since she was going to sell it anyway, I'd damn well want my car back! Yes, the blame probably does lay with the car lot that sold it to her, however it would probably be impossible to go after something that may not exist anymore.
