Ever since I got my car in the 80's, the rear end has always resonated at cruising speed, 45+ Now it has a 5 bolt rear, fully rebuilt with an Auburn posi, new gears and the shaft was balanced. New rims and tires too. It still sings. Did the later style shaft with the harmonic balancer solve this? The car would be extreemly quiet inside if I could get rid of this. Micah
I don't know if it is an inherent thing with the 8" which is solved by a shaft with a harmonic balancer or is it with the driveshaft itself. Either way, has anyone had the same issue and solved it with the upgraded shaft. Micah
The inertia ring suppose to cancel out the resonance frequency in the driveshaft that is caused by sound traveling through a hollow tube. My driveshaft use to sing if you want to call a whaa-whaa...whaa-whaa singing at highway speeds. I busted the ring off with a BFH and now my driveshaft lost it's singing voice. If you're hearing a one note song most likely its not the driveshaft, could be the tires.
First rear end was set up by Henry Ford. He didn't rebuild the second. It has made a similar noise for 30 years. Only when cruising under power. I don't hear it coasting. Everything on this rear end is different/new except for the driveshaft. Even the trans is different. I'm just trying to figure out if this is an inherent thing with the 8" or the standard driveshaft. If it is the shaft, I will spend the time and money tracking down an upgraded shaft. If it is of no help, then I won't waste my time and just live with it like I have. Thanks, Micah
My original 8" was quiet as is my existing 9". My brother had a 9" that he rebuilt and it made noise. Could it be the back lash is too tight or too loose on your differential set-ups? Not sure which would cause noise. Bruce
This might be something to ask Bryant of www.sdgearaxle. com. He is a member on the forum, and his line of work. He may be able to shed some light on the topic.... http://mmb.maverick.to/members/bryant.7151/
Nope.. it is not a common issue with the 8" or 9" rears. And most(none?) of my dozens of cars equipped with them had those harmonic devices installed. It surely has something to do with your parts or installation. The fact that it goes away on deceleration should paint a bit better picture too. Driveshaft balance.. u-joints.. pinion angle.. pinion bearing wear.. backlash settings.. etc, etc. Any one or combination of those things can cause the driveshaft and underbody itself to resonate.
With so much of my car no longer what it was 30 years ago and to have the same issue is puzzling. I have another Maverick that an idiot took out the 302 and the rest of the drive train. It was going to be another project car. I need to find a shaft for it. Maybe I will just swap them out when I locate one and see what happens. http://mmb.maverick.to/threads/micahs-second-maverick-project.104545/ Micah
