If its an unmolested 289 and you dont know where to look for numbers(door tag) If the seller will let you pull a valve cover(doubt it if its a runner)Look at the push rod holes in the head.If they are round it aint no K code(unless heads were swapped)If they are slots then its a K code. This is only reliable if the engine is un-molested.I have more info just not off the top of my head.

Door tag Fifth digit will be a K for the engine code.It will also have a dual point distributor and Hi-Po exhaust manifolds(left and right will look the same) not like a 302

I seem to recall that mercury didn't get the K-code 289 hipo. A k code in a mercury is just a plain 289......but I could be wrong.

No Hi-po K code in the Cougars. Only a standard with 2 or 4 bbl. If you wanted horsepower you needed to go big block. Boss 302 was used in the Eliminators.

Craig is correct. There were VERY few Hi-Po 289 Comet Cyclones in '65(and '64).
K code in those cars meant 289 4V. The majority were the non hi-po 225 hp versions.
It took a build sheet to determine if it were the hi-po version.

I have a buddy into those cars. He is about to finish a red/red '65 Cyclone. K-code.
    Original 289 4V 225hp 4 spd car.

What else would your buddy need to know about them? Oh, he might want to know
that they are one of the more expensive cars to restore!

In their VIN decode...they identify a K code as Hi-Po, but they correct that elsewhere on the site. The site needs some updating.

You can only get what they're willing to pay.... $5K? $8K? If it's truly as nice as you say then it does NOT need to be restored, it needs driven and loved... Restoring a NICE car is ridiculous...
