I am new to this forum and new to a 74 Maverick which I purchased at an auction in early August of this year. I am also fairly new to auto repair having spent much of my life in books.

The car is really nice but needs work. It had lots of work done before I purchased it--according to receipts I found in the glove compartment. It was probably in a front end accident because radiator, hood, and left side panel have been replaced. I have tuned it and it works fine. However, now I have a vibration problem. When I get to 35mph, it begins to vibrate until I reach about 40-45mph then it hums. When I come to a stoplight, sometimes it does fine but sometimes it knocks, like something underneath is knocking. If I put it in neutral the knocking stops.

I would like to use this as my "experimental" car and learn about fixing cars. As I said, I am new to this so am learning as much as I can as I go along. I have always liked the Maverick, since we owned one when I was a kid. So, I would like to ask if anyone had an idea of what may be causing this. The car was recently front end aligned and, as I said, lots of stuff was replaced and in new condition. Thanks for all your help.

    Welcome!
Couple of thoughts on the knocking while idling at a light. I have experienced a too low idle speed can cause things like exhaust to rattle. Could be anything else that might have a bracket a bit loose. Your vibration could be many many things. If you know that all the tires are good and balanced, you could check things like ujoints, driveshaft not true, and of course as mentioned before your front end components. Keep us posted as to your success.

Front end hits can cause a lot of problems depending on hard it was mashed.:D Hold your foot on the brake and push the gas down easy to see if the engine torques over to one side. A broken motor mount, front or rear can cause some of your probs. The balancer on the front on the crank could also be damaged, is the trans full of fluid? The hum could be from trans or torque converter also if they were slammed in the crash:D Glad to see you are wanting to learn about cars etc. damn few of us left with this world of throw away tinker toy cars:clap:  Good luck and never give up

Thanks to you guys for the tips. Here are my replies.

To bigblockmav, the engine is a straight 6, 250, automatic, with 78,000miles. I just got under the car today and saw some wear and tear down there (rhyme not intended). I don't have anything to compare it to so can't tell how much. There was a transmission fluid leak when I first got it but I had that fixed.

To Dan Starnes, I adjusted the idle speed so the car doesn't shut off. It still seems to have a knock under the car when I come to a stop light and keep it in drive. It stops when I put it in neutral.

To Old Guy, I will do that check for broken motor mount soon.

To 1badmav and Old Guy, and everyone else, I ordered a Chilton's repair manual for the '74 mav so will be able to let you know a bit more on what I find underneath. I'll be able to report more on ujoints, driveshaft, etc. As I said, I am new to this game but willing to learn.

Does anyone have a connection to a mav junkie in the west Washington area around Olympia? (I'll post on a separate thread as well)

    Thanks!
