im thinking of looking into an eagle talon thats for sale. the ad says that the transmission seal blew out and he quit driving it when it did, and im not a car guy, so i figured id post here to see if i could get some help. first off, would a blown seal damage the transmission? i know driving it with a blown seal will, but if you stop driving it when it happens??? he says that he has the transmission ready to be dropped and its just held on by 2 bolts now for ease of dropping and replacement of the part. its a fwd, so i don't know how hard it is to get to the transmission, but i plan on checking all that out before i make a purchase. he says it runs great and everything, just the blown seal is the only problem. Any problems i should look out for with it being an eagle talon? its a 93 model. i don't know if ill buy it to keep or sell when its done, but i kinda favor keep, at least for a little while. opinions? advice? help? any of the above is greatly appreciated.
If it wasn't run low on fluid the trans is probably ok. But if you're not a car guy you should probably get one that doesn't need that kind of work. Try and focus more on a good mechanically sound car that maybe needs paint or a radio or something like that.
Changing the transmission on any FWD car is not much fun. I've done engine and transmission swaps in a Nissan Sentra, a Honda Prelude and two Honda Accords. You generally have to take at least the lower control arm loose on either side and pop the CV axles out of the transmission. On the Accords and Prelude, I had to remove the CV axles completely, which requires an air impact, and dealing with the double wishbone front suspension on those isn't much fun either.. I've never worked on a Talon, so you may or may not have to remove cross members and what not. Definitely take a good look a it and see before you buy it. Take someone with you who knows about working on FWD cars if you're not sure.
thanks for the replies guys. one thing about the difficulty level of the work involved versus my experience, i want to be a car guy, and the best way i learn is by doing. i can't seem to learn from books or what someone tells me, i gotta get in there and do it. i've always been the kid that when i get a new toy, the first thing i do is take it apart as much as i can and put it back together (or at least try). i was afraid to do that to the maverick cause now i have some sense and realize stuff doesn't always work again after i've "experimented with/explored" it. well, i figure the worst that can happen is i loose interest, and who knows, i may find some interesting stuff i can use, and sell parts off of it. or if i can get it running, i believe they're supposta be nice little cars. anyways thanks again guys. i'll see if my uncle can go with me.
Duck Tape, I think my brother has looked at that car. Its been for sale for a while, and it had other issues that the guy didn't tell my brother about, that he found out about while looking at the car.
thanks guys. i think i will indeed go with the majority, er, unanimous vote and avoid this one. besides, i haven't heard from the guy in the past couple days anyways. thanks again.
