Need to get my Maverick to somehow smell less "exhaust-fumey"... the wife is pregnant and is hypersensitive to the exhaust smell. It's a 75 with smog pump, cat con, charcoal canister all hooked up, all stock, the stock carb has been leaned out. The single exhaust only has a small resonator before the axle, no muffler in the back. Is there an OEM replacement to the original canister one, and will it help the fumes? I had a 78 Mustang with stock exhaust with a resonator and muffler and didn't notice the fumes then.

If you have exhaust fumes in the car...You have an exhaust leak...Is the car loud??? Check entire system for rotted/perforated pipes...Leaking joints and the exhaust manifold/manifolds gaskets and condition. My guess...Top of cat' converter is rotted through...Not uncommon. And definitely keep the wife out of the car till you solve the issue...Good luck!!!

Thanks, it's not fumes entering the car, it's from the tailpipe (house windows are usually open) or the smell is on me after I drive it (so she says). The pipe from the converter to the resonator was just replaced. Just wondering if the missing muffler could help.

Exhaust fumes are exhaust fumes, nothing really reduces them, the system just routes them rear of car where they are not bothersome... If they are getting in car then as others have said, there is a leak and/or maybe a hole in body at rear of car.,..

These old cars smell more "fumey" than modern cars. They just don't idle as clean as what you are probably accustomed to. Your cat may be worn out if it's never been replaced.

What Larry said, how old is the cat? Modern 3-way cats are far more efficient, of course the car has to have been running a bit to get it warmed up and working effectively.

Your wife is pregnant. Maybe in a few months the problem will go away, as she is probably extra sensitive to things right now.
