well, i know this may sound like bickering to you all..but as you probably know, i bought a 73 in fair condition...few dents and all..but its all good..well, i went over my car thuroughly today, the first thing i noticed when i opened the trunk lid was rust!!!..about a 17 inch long by 8 inch high patch of it...sure enough it went all the way through with 2 tiny holes thru the body..the rust is in the passenger rear quarter panel, and best i can tell, its because he took the trunk liner out and put his spare radiator water back there..thats the ONLY rust on the car..and appearently he covered it up with green paint from the outside...anyways, another thing i noticed is that theres ony a "MAVERICK" emblem on the passenger side behind the window...there aren't even holes on the other side for one....but anyways, how do i go about fixin rust??I'd like to get most the body stuff done soon so I can get it ainted and lookin right...thanx for any help...
Cancer Rust is the cancer of automobiles ... Unless your planning to sell the car soon my suggestion would to be to cut out the rust completly and weld in a new panel ... If your not fimilar with the process then i would suggest finding a donor car ( Junk Yard) and getting a replacement panel, taking it to a cheap body shop and having them cut out the old one and weld in the new one ... You can save a few bucks by doing the finish work your self ... Doing anything else (sanding , Bondo) will only hide the problem but sooner or later that ugly horse will rear its ugly head ...
Oh yeah My maverick has no emblems at all ... Quite possible it was done after the fact and the previous owner never got to the other side ... sounds like something i would do
yeah..i figured out, after taking a LOOOONNNNGGG second look at it, that the guy took the drivers side rear "fender" and trunk from a grabber...he did a botch job..the fender is still in good condition..but the guy used screws covered with bondo to hold the panels together...what an idiot...almost starting to think the car wasn't worth the 300 i spent on it..i say almost, because for some reason this car has me hooked...i almost got an offer today for it too...but before the guy could open his mouth, i told him how it was not for sale...lol....my wife thinks im crazy because im worrying about how it appears, rather then how it runs...she thinks im "nitpicking"...silly woman...oh well, guess i have my first experience in auto body repair on my hands..not till i get the drivetrain fixed though...
yeah..i decided to just keep the car and put ALL the work in it..a "frame-on" restoration..it doesn't need a frame off really...as the undercarriage looks like new...im currently getting quotes on how much it'll cost to get the drivers side rear quarter re-done properly, and to get a new plate welded in place of the passengers side where the rust is..my mom and step-dad are gonna help with that..I decided not to mess with the internal engine for now, as it doesn't need to be messed with(130k since new and well maintained).I will however, be rebuilding the whole suspension, the external engine(maybe adding a turbo too!!), and replacing the tranny filter, and all gaskets..I'm also buying some ford brand chrome centerline wheels, and a new grille, to make it look nice "for now"...so, 5 years from now, it oughta be one sweet machine..
Both my rear quarter are rusted through from the beginning of the quarter near the rear of the door, down to the bumper. Oh well, got quoted a few years back, not too $$$ BTW, does the word Unibody ring a bell?
yeah..lol..thats what i was thinkin when i saw what the guy did....its not too bad i suppose...workable for now....gotta get the drive train workin good first....
