I have an AMC 258 six cylinder engine that is showing no oil pressure until I rev it up. At 2000 rpm's it shows just over 20 psi. is this normal? engine has been running like this for a while and does not make any noises that make me concerned. If this is abnormal, what do you think I should do?

I'd check and see if the oil pressure gauge is reading correctly. If it is you may need a new pump. Does it come up any higher than 20 pounds at all?:)
Just a thought but the next thing I would do is pull the valve cover off and see if it is pumping oil.

I ruled the sending unit out because I ran a mechanical pressure gauge and that is how I came to see the pressure reading. I will check under the valve cover to see if any oil is getting on to the lifters and valves

How many miles is on the motor? If the main bearings are gone the pressure will be low with making any noise. A new H/V pump would help.
I agree with Don, a bad gauge could be it too.

You know? I just checked the oil level and it appears to be way too thin. Almost like the thickness of diesel and has a gasoline smell to it! I'm sure this has to be related to the issue but I wonder if this is indeed gasoline, how in the world found its way in to my oil pan???? I must add that I did not put it there nor did anyone else since I have the van in a storage unit and locked up! Beats my understanding. Help!!!

Flooding or extremely rich mixture or a bad mechanical fuel pump?
repeated cold starts can cause something like this too.

Please elaborate a little on "cold start"

Repeated flooding of the engine dumps raw fuel into the cylinders which washes down the cylinder walls into the oil pan.

replace fuel pump and change the oil with some 20w50 and a good filter and see if the pressure comes up

:yup: The diaphragm in a mechanical fuel pump can rip and put gasoline right into your oil pan. I bet that's what it is. Hopefully there's no collateral damage from running it with such thinned out oil...

That's it! It now makes sense! ok, time to get a fuel pump!.
