Vid explainers it fairly well. Is this normal or do I need a new oil pump. Perhaps is there another explanation?

I think you are fine, most cars run pretty low psi at hot idle, some new cars have a spec of min 4psi at idle. Based on the fact that your needle is halfway between 0 and 3 and that your oil pressure rises with rpm I would say there is nothing wrong there. I would find out what is the unit of measurement for your oil pressure in your owners manual though, my guess being that your car is metric that it is Bar measurement, which equals to 1 bar= 14.5038psi, so halfway between 0 and 3 would be 21.75ish psi which is perfectly good.

More than likely its the sending unit, a very common problem on a 4.0. I would hook a gauge to it to make sure though.
