    Broken Rear

Would like to know a little about your present set-up. Std or auto trans, horsepower , and tire size. Do you have slicks and or posi rear end? Also four or five lug axle's. The reason I ask is that I have run many 8in Maverick rear ends with high horse power and high torque engines with spooled gears and 10.5 slicks and never have broke one, not even an axle. Maybe yours was the original rear and in need of some work. Of course I always ran C4 trans and the shock is not as severe as with dumping the clutch on a stick shift. Anyway you look at it the 9inch is probably your best insurance in any application. Very much interested in finding out what broke, pinion bearing, gears or what. Always trying to learn something about that stuff. Keep in touch.

    a good rearend

Well my lower back is killing me, does that count?
Anyway Old guy is right. A good 8" posi unit will handle lots of HP/TQ. Just has to be setup right. The 28 spline axles are a little weak. Currie, Mark Williams or Moser Eng can make you a set of forged steel ones that are mighty strong. Old gear oil, and bearing wear can kill a rearend when some HP starts hitting it. Get good traction and something is going to break.
Lots of people say that the 28 spline axles are way to wear. Well Ford/Merc used them in very heavy cars, posi and non that people towed tarilers with all the time. Before everyone bought a truck or SUV they used big Fords with 28 spline and nonposi rearends. They lasted a lot time. Ford Only thought it a problem to go to the 31 Spline on Racing setup. BB engine CJs, or a possible car bought to race, Boss 302s, Shelby Stangs.
8" 28 spline properly prepped will work fine. Gear selection is a problem thou
