Went to the stereo store to replace my factory stereo in my 1999 Nissan Pathfinder. They said it would cost like a million dollars to hook it all up to prevent the new system from ruining the speakers. Something about that Nissans have a special stereo system that isn't compatible w/anything else.
I just want to replace my broken stereo w/something that can play radio, CDs, and has a USB adapter if possible. Nothing fancy, nothing expensive.

Anyone have any suggestions? Do I really have to get special wiring, or would a certain type of replacement stereo just fit in nicely w/no modifications?

    Thanks,
    Tavia

Don't see any reason why you can't just install a new head unit and speakers and bypass the factory system using new speaker wires.

I'm sure you can get a stereo from Walmart, or similar store, that will fit perfectly in your truck. They are usually set up for 2 or 4 speakers. If your Nissan has more speakers, just use 4. Shouldn't be anything complicated, but I have been wrong before!:)

Just a thought, go to www.crutchfield.com and select Outfit my Vehicle and see what comes up.

You might have to run new wires for the speakers like mentioned earlier. And they sell adapters to make the power supply plug and play.

yeah, don't do like I did once and cut the plug off and try to wire it like the old days....get the adapter. Crutchfield is probably best for the diy'er.
    Good luck.(y)

get the adapter for sure, but the trick on those is if the factory amp(s) is in the dash or @ the speakers. you can by pass the amps but if it's a componet system you would be best off replacing the speakers also.

I guess the question is what is the need for a new head unit? if it is just an upgrade in features you be better served finding what you want on rbay or in a junk yard and keep it factory. (imo)

The problem is the Bose system has amp's for all the speakers and if you use a high powered headunit it will over power the speakers. So get the adapter and choose a low powered headunit and it will work fine.

Some of the newer cars stereo's are tied into the anti-theft systems. That may be why you were told it couldn't be replaced by just anything....

Why not just spring a little extra cash and buy speakers too, then replace the whole thing? You'll get better sound and sometimes you can get package deals on a head unit/speakers.
