Has anyone converted their points to the Petronix electronic ignition and added the flamethrower coil? How much wider can you increase your spark plug gap? Do you still use the original spark plugs or use the ones recommended for later model mavericks?

I did the conversion, but used an ACCEL coil. I widened the gap by .005, to .40, and it runs very well. I used the Ignitor ll, and have had no problems.

Has anyone here done this conversion on an inline six, and more specifically, does anyone know if there is a distributor cap available with HEI-style posts for the I-6 engines?

MapleMav; don't need a special cap. The conversion fits in the stock distributor, and uses the stock cap. The DuraSpark uses a different cap, has a taller and larger cap to space the terminals apart to prevent spark scatter. If you go with the Pertronix, Accel or another conversion kit, they come for 6 or V-8. Good luck.

It just seems to me I had read an article where they used a cap with HEI-style posts along with the Pertronix conversion just because the HEI-style posts provide more surface contact with the plug wires, and therefore more consistent spark. Or would that kind of thing just not make enough difference to bother with?

    Pertronix conversion

I have a 302 in my Merc1. I converted to the Pertronix system with a hotter ignition coil. I love the response and the start. I am very satisfied. I did slightly increase the spark plug gap. I went with Motorcraft spark plug wires. I suggest the Pertronix system.
