I have a 72 maverick with a c-4 transmission and 164 flywheel, I tried to replace the old school starter with a newer powermaster gear reduction starter and it has a 10 tooth Bendix and my orginall starter is 9 tooth, everyone says the 10 tooth starter will work with my flywheel .but when u hit the switch to start the car it engages but gets stuck on the flywheel,i borrowed a friends starter which is a 10 tooth gear reduction and it does the same thing, soo I put the old school starter back on and works great?

can I buy a 9 tooth Bendix and replace the 10 tooth with it?? I really want the gear reduction starter!!

I am running the same starter on my car 164 tooth flywheel, 351W and a C-6 but it all mounts up with the same tolerances and it works perfect. There should have been a shim pack included with the starter maybe it needs to be shimmed. Mine worked perfect out of the box, all I had to do was re-clock it to clear the headers.

I know what you are talking about. I'm running a Boss 302 164T flywheel and a built C4. I have a new Power Master starter in the box on the shelf because it does the same thing locks in the flywheel. I purchased an MSD starter that your can clock the mount for proper match.
