I'm starting to plan the removal of the 250 engine in my 74 Maverick. I have R&R'd a few engines in the past but have worked mostly with GM's until now. I understand the need to bag and tag everything, and to take pictures as I go. This job looks pretty straightforward, with ample room to work. I'm thinking I should detach the power steering pump and leave it in the car. Also thinking of removing the AC compressor and moving the lines out of the way. Of course fan comes off and radiator comes out. Wondering if I should or can try to pull the engine and trans out together or if it would be better to unbolt the trans and wrestle it out separately. Also interested in any tips there might be for wrestling the engine mounts or other aspects of this job. Anything folks can share with me will be appreciated.
There really isn't any "wrestling" involved. Drain the cooling system. Remove radiator. Disconnect fuel line, all hoses, and wiring. Remove accessories. Decide if you want to pull engine & trans together or just engine, which will determine whether or not you need to remove the drive shaft or unbolt the flexplate/flywheel and bell housing. Remove motor mount bolts (and trans mount if applicable). Lift the engine out...
with the length of the six and tranny be sure you have enuff equipment to get combo' almost vertical to 'pull'. Separating C4 tranny from six isn't too difficult just dont let TC slip off ...
What Jason said .... Pick the back end of the car up a bit and you won't have to use so much angle getting the engine out. Be sure to secure the front wheels from rolling. The first time I saw someone do this was a "Eureka" moment for me.
