After alot of fiddling around with the dash, I finally got another (I don't wanna say new cause I got it out of a junk yard - more on that later) headlight switch put in. Dash lights still do not work, the headlights remain dimmer then normal I still have to use the brights to avoid that Candlelight look. The one plus out of it is now I can operate the dome light without having to open the doors so it did fix something. I know I know it's a junk yard light switch but I didn't have much choice the one I ended up having to return to Auto Zone didn't fit because of a stupid mounting bracket that was tack welded onto it, nobody else had what I needed. I did gank more then one light switch at the Junk yard so I can always put the other one in and see what happens. It's only a GBFN (Get By For Now) part anyway eventually I will replace it with a new one when and if I ever find one. Checked the connections at the headlights they're in good shape no frayed wires that I can see but there is alot of gunk in the engine compartment, as I've said in previous posts the car was not well taken care of by it's Previous Owner(s). Alt light doesn't seem to work either I know it's a good thing to not see it come on but I know when the car starts it's supposed to pop on for a breif second while the system does it's startup check every car i've ever driven old and new has done that so I know this Mav should be no exception, Brake dummy light also does not work. Oil and Temp lights work fine though.
Had the same problem in my '70 once upon a time. Turns out all of the metal electrical contacts were corroded. Cleaned the contacts on the rear of the light switch, the ribbon cable connectors and lamp sockets on the instrument panel, the fuse block connections including the plug-in on the engine compartment side of the firewall, and the plug in the engine compartment that goes to the headlamp harness. Been fine since then, about seven years now. Good luck.
I had the same problem with my 73. I found out that the problem was that the dome light is on a different fuse then the dash lights.. so before ya go tearin it apart, try checkin your fuses first.
