    it's easy!!!

i took out the old am radio out of the maverick because i wanted a newer cd player in it, but still wanted to look halfway original...so i took my dremel and widened it at top and bottom just alittle bit, otherwise it's like it was made for it. with some wedging it went right in but you'll have to play with it. most will fit but there are some radios that are to big, just take some measurements before you decide.

I also installed one. Some mavericks had a potmetal radio faceplate, these are easier to work with than the plastic ones. Mine was plastic from the factory, and I found a metal one @ the salvage yard. Just enlarge the hole as needed and you're on your way.

If that wont work, find a maverick that had no radio, like our bracket car. They just have a flat piece with no holes, that way you can cut it out as needed. Those radio-less mavericks make great race cars....that plate that's supposed to have a radio makes a great place for guages.

I put a CD player in my 77 and after cutting the hole a little bigger that frame piece went right in. Fit perfectly in between the chrome ring on the Maverick face plate. I believe mine was metal too.

    a little fab work

i installed a pioneer unit w/o tearing up any original bracketry, wiring etc. i made a bracket for the face plate out of 3/16 aluminum by using the original as a template. its easy to cut and can be bent by cutting a groove on a table saw or similar (carbide!) where you desire the bend. i used the stereo faceplate for the opening, the original back bracket worked fine. painted the new bracket satin black, made a pigtail w/ connectors to fit into original harness and its looks like ford put it there, and i can put the old a.m. back to original easily. also the package tray has cut outs for 6x9 speakers that i mounted underneath, took out the fiberboard package tray "top" (inside car), and made new one from 1/8" hardboard. i then cut speaker holes and covered it with speaker fabric (radio shack) w/ spray adhesive. it looks sano and again easy to go back to stock if needed.
