Just though I post a picture of a JAZ Recovery tank I just installed (on my massive 250). They look good and come in colors, about $17 from JEGS.
I know it looks kinda of wierd. If the radiator overflowed due to heating it just vented to the ground. Now the overflow tube runs to the bottom of the tank and the top is vented to the air. It is just your standard tank that lets the coolant go back into the radiator when it begins to cool down. I have since recored the radiator so it will probably won't do it anymore, but in Redding it gets to 115 in the summer so I not counting on it. "Recovery" is the name JAZ calls it...the guys at NAPA didn't know what I was talking about when I mention it. It is the same as that plastic radiator overflow kit you can buy at Walmart ...but I didn't want that what plastic tank, John
the picture is deceiving, looks like that hose is connected from the bottom of it up to the top of it, doesn't actually look like the radiator is hooked up to it. I do like it much better than those big ugly plastic generic jugs you get at autozone actually, now that I look at the picture closer, I have to agree with craig, I can see the overflow from the radiator still dangling and pointing towards the ground, you sure you have it hooked up right??
Here's another view. The first was not so good. This should show the radiator overflow hose going to the botom of the tank. The the tank overflow goesback down along the side of the radiator. John
I bought a cheap over-flow can from Summit, NHRA approved and they come in all different colors. Really adds a "cleaner" look to the engine bay.
You can take the cap off to see if you need coolant. Thing is, when you mount it, fill half full. It is basically a closed system until it overflows, which should be seldom.
how is it mounted? I can see the two different hoses in the first picture, it just looks like it is connected to itself
The tank is mounted by two 1/4 x 20 treaded mounting inserts in the tank. Just drilled two holes and got two boldts and it mounted right up. Here is another pic (not meaning to eat so much storage space). I have turned the hoses so that they are more visibly discernable. The tank works great. As far a checking coolant level you just need to have some in the tank, then check the radiator like you normally would when it is cold. If you haven't had an overflow (that would mean more than one quart overflow out of the radiator) out of the top tank vent, the radiator will always be full (barring leaks from hoses, etc).
I'm so glad you shared these pictures! I was looking through the new Summit cataloge over the weekend and thought one of thoes tanks would be a great addition. Now I'm sure it will be! Thank you
