Hi Im old so be nice even tho' my pickup is a GM product. I want to put a 9" rearend with discs and coil-overs/4 link in my S10 scooter. Did the Versailles ever have coil springs in its short life? Did it always have rear dics? Were there any rings that were oversize, like 9-3/4"? Did they use a posi-lock? Will all 9" third members interchange? Any one have experience in this modification? Is the axle a 31 spline? Can the axles and axle-housing be shortened OK? Any advice or comment welcomed. Ben
no Versailles rear ever came with coil springs and you can easiely put a 9-3/4 center in one and some did come with track-locks ,,just as easy to put a 8.8 disc brake set up on any 9 inch housing good luck with your project Ben
All Versailles were leaf spring as they were based on the Ford Granada. All 9 inch rears in Versailles were disc brakes. The same rear could be found in the Granada and the Mercury Monarch but could have been disc or drum. My 9 inch "N" case center section from my 72 Gran Torino Sport fit right in the housing like it was born there. My Versailles axles are 28 spline. I don't know the other answers.
Follow up question on 8.8 disc brakes Thanks for the info on the LincVersailles 9". I have a 9" (maybe posi???) out of a '76 F150 that has 59-3/4" housing flange dimensions and I would need about 3" off each side to fit the S10. It looks like the only axle that can be shortened is the 31 spline due to the taper of the 28 spline shaft. Is this right? Also the 9" I have has the large 3-5/32" bearing bore. Will the 8.8 disc setup mate to the large tube or does the 8.8 go right to the 9" axle tube flange? Lastly, where is the 8.8 found?(what is it on?) I think the Versailles rear is gonna be hard to find. Thanks again Ben
The simple thing to do would be to shorten the 9 inch truck rear to fit the S10 and get 2 new axles from Moser or Mark Williams. Then you would be done. A Versailles rear is getting super hard to find and, if you did find one, you would have more money wrapped up in it then you would if you just worked the truck rear and got the new axles.
from what ive seen and read the explorer/ranger 8.8 is pretty much a bolt in and close to the stock width for a s-10.
