I need some suggestions for the sound system. I have 5.25" in the front, Kennwood headunit, 6x9's in the back. The system is good but obviously not great. I want something like my Hummer's sound system. I don't want crazy nasty bass but I want a really good sounding system. I'm gonna have sound insulation done before I do the sound system install. I'm working on a box that's gonna fit in the back. The only problem is the box would sit right under the 6x9's but I'll figure that out I guess.

So my question is, should I be using 6x9's if I am gonna have a sub/amp? I wanna use something smaller than the 5.25's in the front. If I can get away with something smaller than 6x9's in the back that would be great too. I would then install them in the rear large plastic pieces that are on the left and right of the rear seat. Is one sub enough?

    Keep the 6 x 9's.

One sub is enough. Bass don't care about left and right channels too much.

You will need an amp to get anywhere close to the sound in your Hummer.

First thing you want to do is figure out how much space you want to devote to your sub. From there pick one (or more) out that fits your space requirements keeping in mind the subs recommended enclosure volume. If SQ is your singular focus then you should be fine with very little room. A single 12" would do nicely and with some creative wood work can fit under your rear package tray with 6X9's. But if you are not totally sold on the 6X9's, I'd ditch them. They are not needed since you have the sub. I have 5.25 in my rear deck and the mid base response from them is surprising. This gives me enough room for my sub enclosure which resides under the package tray. I have 3 10"s. Yes its nasty bass when I want it to be but dialed back, its very clean.

for my '71, im planning to run a dual voice coil speaker for the dash (5x7 i think), 6x9's for the rear deck and two 10" woofers behind the rear seat with a Fosgate amp. small, simple btu yet should sound great :thumbs2:

what about people that use component speakers to buil their system? you guys that would be worth it?

I don't have anything against the 6x9's but I don't see them used a lot in systems that have subs.

I have 3-way components/separates (6-1/2", 4", tweet) in the front. I think they are great.

    The rear 5 1/4 are simple 2-way.

JL Audio for Mids and Highs, Kicker for subs and amps.

Mine is ole school, I have a 50 watt amp and crossover for the tweets, A 75 watt amp and crosover for the mids, A 200 watt amp for the 6X9 rear, And a powered Bozoka for the extra bass if i want it. I cant remember what brand the mid speakers are but the 6X9s and tweets are realistic as are the amps and crossovers. Sometimes i like to listen to it loud and clean, Which this set up does very well.

I think Realistic is what Radio Shack sold at one time if I remember correctly. 6X9's can be really good, and nowdays there are some very high quality ones that will give a set of 8's a run for their money. Has anybody ever tried using a set of 8's in the back window?

I run a 5x7 mid with tweets and one 10" w6 sub with 500 watts all jl audio. This is a good setup if you listen to rock, clean bass and good highs. I would leave what you have and just add a sub.

I have two Blaupunkt 6.5's in the kick panels up front, two Blaupunkt 6x9's on the rear package tray, powered by a Kenwood 625 watt amp. All four speakers are dual voice coil. Sony head unit. The amp is too much for the speakers, but turned down the sound quality is good. I do think it needs subs, and when I get them I'll probably run the 6x9's straight offf the head unit and let the amp handle the sub(s). It's cheap stuff but it sounds very good for what it is.
