I have a speedometer issue. My Maverick, My wifes van and my Truck all seem to say different speeds when we are following each other. I have noticed my truck at 70 on the interstate seems to be passing most folks. I have been told these GPS handhelds will track you current speed while you drive down the road. Anybody know anything about them, if they are accurate or have any suggestions about getting it checked. The dealer said the computer did not find an error with the speed sensor but I am not sure how that would know if the needle is reading the sensor correctly. I used to be in Law Enforment a couple of hundred years ago and know these roadside display radars are not alway calibrated as they should be and I would prefer not to get the Yellow notice by the current Lawmen folks if I'm wrong. I live in Middle Georgia south of Macon and cannot find any bussiness that calibrates speedometers. Kelly
I have a Magellan Meridian gps and it usualy is accurate within 2 mph while accellerating, and closer while travelling at a constant speed. I bought mine for 220 bucks at walmart. Bought it for hunting tho..
I know a guy who has a lot of cop buddies. He hooked me up with one who was running radar on the interstate. I contacted him via cell phone, and then drove through his radar beam at 65 mph. He confirmed that my speedo was off a little.
That's what tells the speedo what to read. All they have to do is hook up a scan tool and compare the VSS reading with the speedo, which is probably what they did. Unless you've changed tire diameters I think it's pretty unlikely your speedo is off, since there isn't much that can go wrong except complete failure.
for some reason the speedo in my mav doesn't really go above 45 mph or so??? They can be off, even from 0-45 it is off too, eg, 25 I am doing 40, and so on.
Tire size Jeremy: How much bigger are your tires over stock? I got a speeding ticket in our old '86 Crown Vic once when I put a higher profile tire on the car. Didn't really know I was speeding. Might also be the speedometer gear on the tranny is different.
I am pretty sure I am running stock size tires, I believe it is the speedo assembly somehow that is bad. The car is an original v8 1972, and I have 195/75/14's on it--
Speedometer Definitely not your tires. If the error is constantly off by a certain percentage over the whole speed range it's the gear, I would guess. (Number of teeth on the speedometer gear at the transmission). If the error comes and goes (Not consistant): I had either the speedometer gear or the cable slip and give me a slow reading every once and a while. I was told to lubricate the cable, but the problem eventually fixed itself! [I drove the better part from Ohio to Texas back from our Nationals in my Comet only guessing my speed based on the wine of my 250]!
