My engine turns over when I jump it from the solenoid but not from the ignition key. When I turn the key electric fuel pump works, turn signals etc all work. It also appears I get power to the 6AL MDS controller. I attached a picture showing how things are currently wired. We're hoping to get all the bugs worked out soon so we can plan our trip to the National meet. Where is your Red/Lt Blue wire that triggers the solenoid?? If that's OK, either the neutral safety or maybe ign switch are defective/mis adjusted...
Thanks. I mistakenly left off the red/gr, red/blue and brown wire off the diagram but all three are connected on the correct terminals. Do you or anyone else know how to test the switch? I have a T-5 tranny so I don't think there is a neutral safety switch.
Are you jumping across the solenoid(large terminals), or from battery lug to the terminal with red/lt blue wire?? If it's across the solenoid you may have a bad solenoid,,, If jumping from battery lug to trigger terminal activates the solenoid, you have a problem with switch or wiring... You can jump 12v to the red/lt blue wire at plug on ign switch and see if it cranks... If it does switch is bad/mis adjusted, no other choice...
The engine cranks when I jump between the battery lug to the terminal with red/lt blue wire. Guess I'll order a new switch and pray that's the answer. Do you know how you test/adjust the switch?
It's easy to adjust, loosen steering column and there are two nuts that can be loosened to position switch(slides back and forth)... Has to be several procedures on net for Stang, same switch...
More information. I misinformed you earlier. At some point I reversed the red/blue and red/green on the solenoid. Now I understand why the engine turns over before I get to the spring portion of the ignition switch. Nothing happens when I switch the wires to the correct post. I can run a long test jumper wire from the solenoid and splice it to the red/blue coming off the ignition switch but I'm not sure of I would be creating other component/accessory. The car was originally a six cylinder auto but now has a 347 with a T-5. This is a 73 model that I think had safety interlocks. There is a six wire female connector under the dash that does not have the male counterpart. On one side of the connector there is a double green, white/pink and a red/blue and on the other side a purple/white hash, black/purple and a red/purple. Again there is nothing to plug this into. Does this help?
Got it all sorted out. My engine builder recommended some minor wiring changes. I ran a jumper wire from the ignition switch to the S terminal and she fired right up. This told me to remove the bulkhead connector to clean the terminals again. Looking at the unplugged terminal box I saw where I made a simple error. I realized that I cut the peel and stick insulation to the cutout in the firewall instead of cutting it to clear the outside of the terminal box. That small amount of extra insulation keep some of the plugs from making full contact. Once corrected everything came back to life. Thought I would pass this along in case anyone else made the same mistake.
