My 1971 Comet GT has an SMA-Y steering box. Although this is not listed in the master parts catalog, I did see a post on another forum and the guy mentioned that he also had a Maverick steering box with an SMA-Y tag. The master parts catalog shows SMA-F for manual and SMA-B for power. Can anyone shed any light on this? Thanks

SMA-Y used on '76-'79 Monarch & Granada with P/S, updated version of SMA-B

Probably find it has a late '70s date code.

BTW was also used on Versailles.

Thanks. I have some play in the steering and was concerned that the box was incorrect. Now I can look for play in the under car linkage , or maybe adjust the box itself depending on what I find.

Steering must be unlocked for this procedure. Reach down to the rag joint and twist in a rotating motion, watch steering arm, if it moves without play problem is elsewhere.

Even when fresh there is a small amount of play in steering valve. Occasionally the spring under cap on steering valve will break, adding extra play.
