That is one of the nice things about having a newer car----on any performance car now adays the suspensions/steering is 1000,00000 times better than the old cars.

However, there are many things you can do to improve what u have now.

Flaming River makes some great steering boxes for classic Mustangs, completely redesigned, much better than even rebuilt stock pieces. Cost right around $500. They said they don't have them to fit our Mavs, but maybe if enough of us bug them...

so what exactly do you need to make the steering that tight? im guessing the suspention, power steering box, good tires...am i missing anything?

    ?

How does manual steering with all around KYB gas shocks sound? Not to mention some nice rubber under there. And of course the sway bars?

    OK here goes...

KYB gas shocks are really stiff shocks. The rubber part refers to wide tires. and the sway bars are sometimes called anti-roll bars. There are kits for them with close to one inch sway bars. They prevent the car from leaning. The KYB shocks keep the wheels on the ground after a bump. and the wide tires provide for more traction. do you get it?

The stock steering will never match a newer car but are you sure yours is in perfect condition in all areas? If it is power steering, there is a delay in response that is inherent in the system.
The control valve is spring loaded and has to move a small amount in order to signal the system which way to pump fluid to the cylinder.
On these cars, the steering box could come loose from the frame, any wear in tie rods, idle arm and even front alignment will all contribute to a poor operation.

Do any year Mustangs share the same type of steering box (have the rag joint) as the Mavs. Maybe the early 70s? If they did, you could probably adapt a Flaming River unit to fit the Mav.

Let me point out one thing, Acura's are front wheel drive cars, i've never seen a rear wheel drive one but they might have one. A front wheel drive car is gonna have more responsive steering because you are steering the drive wheels. Personally i've never driven a Rear Wheel Drive car that had as good a steering as a Front Wheel Drive, even the new Mustangs aren't as responsive and I thought they corner pretty good . I still prefer RWD though even if the steering isn't quite as good.

Never drove a Acura or whatever. Havn't driven yours, so can't compare. New Mavericks didn't hndle all that bad. Take it to a good front end shop, have it gone over, put radials ( u didn't say ur tire size,205/215 70r by xx probably ok, bigger footprint is better) and
shocks on on its hard to say personel tastes differ. Mustang II sounded good also.
Note: My wife has a 2000 Mazda 626 & I don't see any thing special in its handling....
