My 1976 Maverick has its original carburetor. I have been having a hard time getting the car to run properly and adjusting the air/fuel screw doesn't perfect it. I can unscrew it almost all the way out and the idle keeps increasing. I have notice power decrease and rough idle. It intermittently pops softly. I have done a couple carburetor rebuilds and haven't seen any positive results. Should I get a rebuilt original carburetor? I have been looking at Carter RBS carburetors, are they worth getting with a stock 250?

first I would find the problem and fix that...:yup:
a guy brought Harold a carb yesterday that he just paid a Guy $400 to build, it wouldn't idle. he called the builder and was told..."we ran that carb on a car, you have a vac. problem" and the Guy hung up the phone...
Harold pulled the top off, the gasket was skewed and the acc pump seal was flipped backwards...new rebuild kit will be in tomorrow.
point is...this Guy paid $400 for a carb that needs to be rebuilt...:slap:
you building it or buying a rebuilt one...if it's not built/installed right to start with it want be right on the car.

A carb rebuild is more than just replacing a few parts... Yeah you can get lucky and toss a kit in one and it run perfectly, or at least better than it did(could run worse)... Back in the day a kit would generally fix one, now often there are other issues...

A proper rebuild starts with a "squeaky clean" cleaning and inspection of all passage ways and air bleeds, some of these are so small a broom straw would not fit into... Also one needs to determine the route of said passages and be sure they are open... Often they intersect another passage at a angle so there could be a plug the blocks the original opening... I try not to deal with the plugs but if there is a blockage that can't be cleared with Berryman or other carb cleaners/dip, it needs to be pulled out and cleaned from that area...

My car overheated really bad (300+ deg) after I took it to a shop. I melted every gasket in the carburetor and others around it. It melted the wire harness for the choke. I'm concerned if the carb is damaged/cracked or if the throttle plate bushings are no good. That's why I've been looking at new carbs.
