Hey everyone. I have a 66 mustang dat ive been fixing n finally have it running. Only thing is that it has a manual 3 speed transmission on the floor. its a straight 6 engine. I want more gears so I was thinking of putting a t5 in it. My question was how difficult is that? Could I throe the t5 in there without doing any modifications? I was thinking of getting a t5 out of a small engine 4 or 6 cylinder 85 or 86 mustang. Any suggestions as far as what are my options or what I can do? And also if any special mods I need
I believe the tranny you are running is going to be one of the small ones (non synchronized) unless its been changed out before. If it is in fact the small tranny you will have to come up with a bell housing from a 67 or later 6 cyl mustang. The later mustang had the big full size fully synchronized tranny. I believe the t5 will bolt to that one but you're still going to need stuff such as correct flywheel, throw out fork and bearing, pilot bearing, drive shaft, linkage, shifter, and I'm sure a few other things I didn't mention. I may even be wrong on it fitting as I have never tried it myself. Maybe somebody that knows for sure will chime in. Good luck with it.
The '66 block will not accept a '67 fully synchronized bellhousing. The '67-up six has a dual bolt pattern and will accept either bellhousing. Modern Driveline makes an adapter to put a T5 behind a 2.77 bellhousing. It bolts to the bellhousing and then the transmission will bolt to the adapter. It is thick enough to make up for the longer input shaft on the 4 cyl T5. You will need to use an 8" clutch disk from a 2.3 Thunderbird Turbo Coupe 4 cyl. Modern Driveline can sell you the correct pilot bearing. You will need to come up with a custom transmission mount
Jeff, are you for sure the 67 bell won't fit the 66 block? I was pretty certain I did the swap over on one several years ago. I use to have a Mustang resto shop in the 80's so I had quite a few Mustangs. It's been a while so I might be wrong but I didn't think so.
here's some info on my mustang site: http://www.ivygreen.de/drivetrain/ and especially: http://www.ivygreen.de/drivetrain/History.html 66 has the dual pattern block, and accepts both bellhousings. but even for the small 2.77 bellhousing you can get an adapter from modern driveline. i'd recommend to upgrade to the 3.03 67 and up 9" bellhousing due to the extended clutch choices...
