In general...chopping a top is not for the un-experienced.You need to have some good fab/welding skills...That said...you will need an extra roof since you will have to section(lengthen) the one you are chopping. The C pillars on a mav dont lend themselves to chopping very well...bad angle and lots of area to em...you will have to section them as well. This is going to lay the backlight(rear glass) at such an angle that it will be virtually useless for visibility.(think mail slot).the A pillars need to be left alone...you dont want to lay em back...Hence the need to lengthen the roof.if you do decide to do one...do yourself a favor and eliminate the door frames/B pillar and rear side glass to keep it simple and clean up the look at the same time. You will end up with a fixed(un openable) quarter window...or make a roll up version a'la' mustang.these are just some of the things you will need to do to get it right.I could go on and on about chopping but...if this doesnt make you think twice...more power to you and keep asking about the process.Mavs/Comets are kinda flexi/flimsey so plan on re-enforcement to keep the car straight while driving it...sub frame connectors etc....Its doable but to get the lines right and the shape to flow will take ALOT of drawing/figuring and measuring as well as going around the car with a marker and a few rolls of thin line tape to figure it out/lay it out.Good luck!!! Could be pretty cool if done right.

If I was going to do a chop on a mav/comet...I would start with a 4 door since the trunk/quarter line is much better for a chopped look than the fast back rear deck line.I would convert the car to a 2 door as well...yeah lots of work but to get the lines right I feel this method would produce the best results.I would probably take a few inches out of the body sides too so the car wouldnt look too bottom heavy with the chopped top.Lots of surface area in the sides of these cars.

Below are pics I did in MS Paint a few years ago, taking about 2 inches off the roof.

To make it look like it does in my pics, which was basically trying to keep all the angles of the pillars as stock as possible, which is the only way it looks right to me, would take a TON of work. You would basically have to cut the roof into 6 sections and then weld sections from another roof in between those sections to make it work. You would definitely need a spare roof or two to take sections out of. Good luck with the windows as well...

Chopped Mavericks can and have been done, but it's not something I think I would attempt.

The cost of cutting the glass, would be more than the car is worth....

As a bodyman I can say it is more work than you can imagine. I have chopped cars before and was shown by another seasoned professional. You have to get your angles correct and cut in the proper spots or the car becomes JUNK very fast. Don't forget you have to cut the doors and door glass, and some chrome trim.It has to be welded correctly or you will have gallons of filler in the roof.If done correctly they look great, but I have seen more cars ruined by failed attempts by amatures. Oh also these are unit body cars, if you cut the roof off you weaken the structural integrity of the car.You may want to support or reinforce the underside first.
