Anybody ever use the Miller Maxstar 150stl. I think its good for what I plan to use it for, exhaust work. What do you guys think? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=003&item=130026294995&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1
I've looked at that welder. I think it'll do a really good job. Before buying on e-Bay, check with your local welder dealers. I've found that they can usually match the price and plus you have local service.
True. But, he did say he wanted it do exhaust work. I imagine the majority of his welding is going to be non-aluminum.
Ya, no aluminum for now. Had the electrician out today and apparently the 220 I have at my panel is only 20 amps. I was told that he would have to run a seprate line to my garage (detached from house) called tri-plex?? Any electricians out there that can tell me what the heck that is?
I'd go ahead and step up to a machine that will do both aluminum and steel....that way when you want to start messing with aluminum, you'll already have the machine for it.
just checked with my supplier, he will sell it to me for 925 out the door you might want to shop around alittle, I know from experince welders have an high mark up. so there is leway in the price most of the time.
What kind of material are you working with (i.e. thickness) and such? Got quoted $1195 for the welder and $205 for the bottle today. I just about passed out.
For work its all stainless steel. Everything from 22 gauge up to 1/4". If your used to the foot control for fine tuning, this unit comes with a thumb wheel instead. It sucks. I dont even use it, I just set the amperage to what I need and run it without any control. Most of the time I'm in awkward positions and couldn't use the control anyway. I plan on buying a Tig machine for myself next year and will get an AC/DC unit. One thing this unit has is scratch to start. A little awkward getting used to unless you've done stick welding.
i currently have a hobart 175 with C25 bottle and a airforce 400 plasma cutter. I too want to get and learn to tig. I took a class about 2 years ago at the local tech school and learned mig and tig. the tig was a huge miller dc welder. did a little aluminum with a spool gun. had a bung welded to my aluminum tank for my buggy and was at ahhhhhh at this guys skill. I got my welder at tractor supply and the plasma from brwelder.com Robert
If it won't accept 25%Co2, and 75% Ar, then I wouldn't touch it. After using gas, there is no substitute....If it will accept gas, snatch it up!
diy tig machine hey fellows check this link out and let me know what you think. I have the parts to make it but have not gotten around to doing it. http://www.hotrodders.com/forum/my-diy-tig-welder-77730.html
Hey guys ended up buying this little tig welder from harbor freight. It was only $200 on sale (Thanks for the advice Mr. Hawco ). It welds great imo. The miller would have been nice but for what I needed it was a little pricey. http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=91811 The only thing that i dont like about it... Its a scratch arc. Meaning, you have to touch the tungsten to the work piece to start it off. Not a huge problem, but took me a few passes to get used to. Watch that argon flow. The stuff is expensive! So adjust the thumb regulator accordingly. Check for leaks! All in all, its a great little machine for want I needed. Well worth the money, IMO. I got the extended warranty for $35. I would reccomend that to anyone that buys stuff from there. Let us know how your machine works out Rolandag, sounds neat .
