is it the tire width or the tire hight that affects the mpgs. on the back i have 195/60/14 tires and would like to swicht to 235/60/14 size tires.

Im pretty sure its both! taller tires will give you more mph, and skinnier tires spin with less restriction, thats why economy cars come with them.

remember that as you increase your tire width, you need to lower your aspect ratio if you want to keep the same tire height.

aspect ratio is the second number in the tire size. its the ratio (percentage) of sidewall height to tire width.

235/60 will have a width of 235millimeters with a sidewall height of 60% of 235 millimeters. So, if you go up with width, then your sidewall will increase along with it if you stay at 60.

    play with this: http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html
