I have a 70 mav with a 170 six and want to put a toploader transmission I found on ebay in it, how can I find out if it will fit? Thanks Bob PS; I just read a post by inline6 from back in june who had a similar question and from what i read it seems the toploader will bolt up ok but the tail shaft may be different depending on what the tranny came out of.

Hate to see a post go unanswered..

I do not know the answer, but
I do not think it will bolt up to a 170. I think??? the bellhousing are different for that motor. The post you read was probably for a 200 I-6 or bigger. They have the same bellhousings as the 302.
Like I said, not for sure.
Hopefully someone who knows for sure will answer.

The toploader will bolt right up to your 170. The differences in the bell housing are on the motor side. As you stated, the length is depended on the original application. If you get one out of a 65-70 Mustang, it should be the same length as your 3 speed or even automatic set up.

    Thanks Dennis.
I hated seeing this post drift further and further down the board.
