Does anyone know the specifications for the chassis on the 1971 Mercury Comet 4 door? I want to make it into a 4x4, but I need to know the wheel base length, etc. so I can find a vehicle to match it. I was thinking that maybe a Ford Explorer would work. Any comments?

    I believe it was a 110" wheelbase.

If you are just dying to make a 4x4 car, I've got a 84 T Bird I'll trade you for the Comet after I get the motor and tranny out. I'm on Hwy 18 just off of US 43, 35 miles north of Tuscaloosa........

So it's 108 to 110 inches? At least that range will give me a good idea of what to look for. Thanks.

Thanks for the T Bird offer, but I would really like to make the 4x4 out of the Comet. I guess it's about the body style. I love that Maverick/Comet body style, in spite of what's been written about it lately in that book on Ugly Clunker Cars (what was the title?). Anyway, now I can start looking for something.

Have any of you attempted or know someone who has attempted this? I know there have been many things done with Mavericks and Comets. Although, I've never heard of anyone wanting to do what I'm doing.

    What?

It seems that you asked for comments about this swap. You want to defend the Maverick/Comet by putting the body on a 4x4 chasis?
I am sorry if I am offending you but to me, putting a car body on a 4x4 chassis makes it look like a joke. It's no different to me than painting it in pastel colors and putting it in one of those crash-em-up derbies.

Just my $.02. and remember that you asked. I just don't see the point aside from wanting to be very different. But, as stated, it's a 4 door-not too many people will get disgusted by it.

    I gotta Agree with Seth.

Cars on 4x4 chassis look amazingly stupid, If you are going to do this find something with no collectible value, such as a 1988 Olds Ciera , or or some other car but to take a Comet or Mav and set it on a 4x4 Chassis is expensive and alos is a white elephant, try selling it for the Crazy amount of money it would cost to do this. No offense meant just my opinion, At least though you arn't talking about sticking it on a jeep frame.

I say go for it. A 4 door Comet isn't exactly a collector car. You only live once. Beat the hell out of it on some trails and be sure to post pics on here afterwords of how fun it was. :yup:

That is why I offered to swap him the T Bird. Even if it is a 4 door Comet, there are many parts on it I could use on my 2 door Comet and Maverick. The T bird has a decent body with a few dents and dings, and I also have a short wheelbase Chevy 4wd pickup frame with both axles under it {unknown condition } That I would gladly swap to save a Comet/Maverick!!
