Was tearing apart the front end on my mav, doing a big to small bumper conversion... and have everything apart, except the four 3/4 drive bolts that hold the bumper shocks on the car... tried everything i can think of short of grinding them off... Used penetrating oil (pb blaster), used some heat from a propane torch until the head was glowing dark red.... and have even broken two breaker bars trying to get these bad boys loose... anyone have any other ideas? Ford and their silly bolts of doom...
breaker bar and a "cheater pipe"... craftsman... at least they are free to replace! time to go see if i can find a 1" drive 3/4 socket and bar i guess... at least i got the grille and headlight bezels repainted hile taking a break from the "tool-eating maverick"
I thought that when heating to loosen you were supposed to heat the nut and keep the bolt as cool as possible. Heat expands..
flash cooled them... you heat the bolt head, and then flash cool it... sometimes the expansion and contraction of the bolt is enough to break some of the crap loose to get it to let go... but the bolt head ice cold after... and still not turning... Typically yes, but i don't think i can get to the backside... it appears the nut welded to the framerail in front is "inside" the frame... ugh
Seems 1" drive and 3/4 socket was the trick, passenger side shock off... god those things are heavy for no bigger than they are... waiting on the driver's side to soak through with some PB and to cool before i go out and tackle it... rear wasn't nearly as hard to do! Seems she's on a weight loss program lately... maybe i can get a sponsor Aerokriol? not heard of that, must check that out... at least in case i have similar problems with the axle nuts
I've always heated the nut until it was glowing, then quickly hit it with an impact gun or wrench. Always works.
The 1" drive was the ticket, paired with about two cans of penetrating oil and a propane torch... until glowing and then smacked the 1" breaker bar with an 8lb sledge, finally heard the happy "pop" as they broke loose... small bumper is mounted and installed... thanks for the help guys
