Yupp....it turns into mustard gas. I knew a guy that was tracking down an R12 leak in his Garage while the motor was running, the R12 went into the carb and came out the exhast as Phozene. Almost killed him.

Wow!!! thats some baad gree gree right there!!! Welding galvanized steel produces cyanide gas...Thats not one you want to inhale either...We use brake kleen in our shop too but, we use it to clean brake parts. If I have to prep bare steel or aluminum for welding I use a 40 grit cookie on steel and a stainless steel wire brush/ aluminum oxide grinding disk for aluminum and wipe it off with a clean rag. If I have to use a solvent...Its long before the welding process begins. Used to hear it in the navy all the time... Complacency kills...

Scary and so true! We use chemicals everyday that have the ability to put us under in a heartbeat! Even soap can turn deadly under the right conditions! It unfortunately takes an accident like this to jog some of our brains into thinking about what we're doing and what we're using to do it with! :scratchchin:

They got rid of TCE in brake clean around here years ago. Ours has been gone at work for well over 10 years now. It was bad stuff. The old brake clean we used from Autopar was, and may still be available in the US market??
    Can you still buy this??

    Good article.

I try and use chemical cleaners as little as possible. Wire wheels and sanders for metal prep whenever I weld.
