well, the reason im here is, I bought my first car...a 73 maverick with the 250ci L c4 tranny...the only thing unoriginal in the car seems to be that someone, somewhere along the line, for unknown reasons, put a ford 9 inch racing rear end in it....the car cost me $280 dollars..it needs a water pump, left front wheel bearing, carb kit, and the brakes need to be done...the interior is nice, got everything working now...had 3 blown fuses, out of the 6 on the fuse board. im puttin a pretty nifty stereo system in it on the first of next month, and im puttin 600 in it to get it runnin good next month...it has a LOT of power for a straight 6..surprised me, gettin up to 100 mph in a quarter mile..it idles real rough, and only seems to want to run good if the egr stuff is disconnected..but, since its smog exemt, emmissions are the least of my worries...this little car is really surprising me..only car ive ever drivinthat wants to do a burnout in reverse.....but anyways, hello....

    Hi there,

Congratulations on your Mav. My first car was a 250 Mav with C4 in it too. Watch out, though, because that $600 can turn into several thousand $$$ really quick--I've fallen victim to that as well.

Welcome to the board, you'll find lots of knowledgeable people here with tons of experience and insight.

Have fun with your Mav, and we look forward to hearing from you more!

    Yours,
    Atzy.

    100 mph 250

I also have a 73 with a 250, was just wondering about the 9in racing rear. Is it equipped with aftermarket axles and a different gear? Maybe someone just re-geared the original 8 inch. Took mine to the strip the other day and from a standing start could barely eek out 80mph with a very well tuned and running six. Could use your info on the rear gearing etc. to improve my times. Those 250's do run hard for their size and rpm limitations. Mine is a 4dr, whats yours? Weight may be a factor as well as I smoked the "Tire" off the line.

well, heres how it was set up, i dont know about the rear end gears...did see an EXACT rear end setup in a 74 four door today at the junk yard.....maybe a dealer option??....anyways, it was idlin at 30mph...pcv hose disconnected, timing quite a bit advanced, running REAL rich, with the tranny kickdown disconnected...and this was with flooring it mind you....it was idling like crap...dyin if you came to a stop too fast...but man, it was throwin me back in the seat when the pedal was put down...

    Tune up etc.

First thing is I don't think the Mav's or Comets ever offered a 9in rear as an option. If the one you looked at is exactly like yours, then you probably have a 8in std issue rear. If the engine is idling at 30mph then it is doing so to overcome the rich condition that is causing it to puke black smoke and die on braking, should be around 600rpm or so it won't creep foward in drive. My suggestion is to replace all plugs, wires and air filter. Make sure the choke is pulled all the way off(open) when the engine is up to temp. The float level is probably to high and sounds as if the whole carb needs rebuilt etc. Take a compression check and set the timing to factory specs. Reconnect the kick down lever and make sure the small spring that holds it in position is installed on the trans lever to body. Make one change or adjustment at a time and eventually she will run like a top.

i have a 73 mercury comet it is. mine is running real ruff. It needs a tune up extreamly bad. but i got it for only 350$ so I think i did good. its only got a strait 6 in it also but it's still really powerful. what i think is interesting is that it came with original 1965 mustang hub caps so if any one knows some one who would like them i would be willing to sell them. well your car sounds nice keep that puppy running and have fun with it:D

Welcome to a great bunch of enthusiast. Hope you keep us updated on your progress. When my Sprint was new it had a 200 with 3 on the tree. I put on a set of headers and had it on the track within a month of buying it. Best it ever ran was a 15.00 at 70 mph. It had no top end. Fastest I could ever get it on the interstate was around 96mph downhill with a tail wind. Surprisingly, it was faster than my 77 with a 289, holly, and duals. Best it can do is a 16.2 at 80. However, I've had the 77 up to 120 with no effort. It could still do some more.

my measurements on the exact distance were probably a little off...more like a half mile maybe...its roughly a mile from the gas station to my street..and my car got up to 98 in a bit over a quarter..so thats my estimate...
