For those of you that have modified 302's in your Mav's, what heads are you using? Just wondering what people have used and what they thought of them. I don't know if I can swing aftermarket performance heads any time soon, but I'd like to know what's good and what's not. I am looking for the 250-300hp level. Probably no chance of doing that with any stock head without lots of maching $$, except maybe GT40P's which have special header problems due to the plug angle.

I'm running GT40P's in mine with the same headers I used for the windsor heads.

BTW, if your interested, I still have the heads that the GT40P's replaced, '70 351W's w/ ported valve pockets & exhaust ports, 3 angle valve job, ARP rocker studs, Comp Cams roller tip rockers. Not many miles. About all they would need is hot tanked and some new valve stem seals, maybe positive type seals like the newer heads use.

    Haven't tried them yet

I had my 68 58cc heads built for my 68 block:

    1.84 intake
    1.54 exhaust - ported
    Hi-Po springs and teflon seals
Guide plates and screw in studs

I'll be using them with Speed-Pro flat tops, Comp-Cams 270H Cam (.500 lift) and Comp-Cams Roller-tip rockers. Hooker Competition headers for exhaust.

I'm hoping for 9.5:1 or 10:1 compression and over 300 horsies and a decent idle.

Will be a little while before I get to fire it up.

69 351W heads pocket and exhaust w/ polished intake ports... they will definitely support the 250-300hp (and quite possibly a lot more depending on your build-up) you want to make with out a doubt man.

I gave 550 for mine... may have got robbed, who knows too late now.

AFR 185's which have been ported out and milled. I'll let you know how I like them when I hit the track this spring.

    All Ford Stuff.......

I probably should have gone the aluminum aftermarket route...

    '70 351W heads
Bowls cut, polished and ported on the exhaust side (gasket match), 1.94/1.60 Ferrea (sp?) stainless valves, ARP screw-in studs, guideplates, bronze guides, Crane billet roller rockers, Melling double valve springs...and milled to 53 cc's running hypereutectic flat tops with valve reliefs. Compression calculated at 10.5-10.6:1.

I paid $75 for the bare head castings and I have just about $700 in parts and machine work in them. It was one of those situations where I started out with a $400 budget for heads and I let it get out of control. I probably would go with the aftermarket aluminum heads if I did it again. I feel that I got a deal on them for what it may have cost, the machinist did some other work for me and gave me a price break on machining.

I"m with littleredtoy, I did the same thing that he did (almost word for word) except I started w/ 63 289 heads that cost me $125 and I had a guy that builds Busch Grand National motors do the work for me.....after all the smoke cleared I had about $1100 dollars total in the heads!!!:( I figured out real quick that I would go the aftermarket route next time!!! Even if you decide to work a set of old heads, send them to a company that does a shit load of them and you'll save some money.....some place like "Power Heads" (I think thats the name) These big companies can CNC port a set of old iron heads for less than someone can do it entirely by hand....and I don't care what anyone says, CNC porting is better then ALL hand portwork. Of course any CNC head will have to be blended by hand ,but the consistency of a CNC machine can not be duplicated by the human hand and die grinder!!!!

I'm seeing a patter here.. :D Sounds like I will be happier in the long run if I buy the aftermarket heads, probably the aluminum ones for the weight savings and cooling. I can get the RPM heads with studs for 529 or so each from jegs complete. By complete, I take it I just need to buy rockers and pushrods (which I have to buy regardless of which way I go)
