i have a 1972 maverick(september of 71...the registration says 72...is that correct?) and i was wondering what kind of gas mileage i should expect from it. it has a 200 I6 in it an a c4, all stock (2.79 gears in the rear are stock i believe). i'm going to north carolina for spring break and i'm just curious how my much gas my car should be using...if it's tuned correcty.(not on the road yet, but it will be soon)

    Interstate driving,I'd expect mid-high 20s,backroad driving probably mid-high teens.

My '72 (250/C4/2.79:1 gear) gets 18-20 around town and mid 20's on the highway.

My '69.5 (200/C4/2.83:1 gear) got about a mile per gallon better around town and could pull off 27 on the highway.

It has about everything to do with how you drive the car. Try to stop as little as possible, and try to maintain the same speed as much as possible. Keep it under 70 mph. When you take off from redlights or whatever, accelerate quickly (don't absolutely floor it), just accelerate quickly so you get into 3rd gear as quick as possible. Once in 3rd gear, ease back on the gas and just keep your foot on it just enough to maintain your speed. This is what gets me the best gas mileage.

When mine was brand new, best I ever got was around 23. It had a 200, 3 speed manual, and 3:00 gears. No power accessories.

i have a 71 maverick... it HAD a 170 cid, with a 3 speed that was a column, but was relocated to the floor.

i purchased my mav in Fearsville, Ky when i was station at Ft Campbell during OEF/OIF. i fixed it up a bit to be able to drive back to tucson arizona with it, where i WAS living at the time.

during the trip of 1750 miles, i averaged 37.5 mpg. keep in mind, this was a 2bbl carb, that was brand new before i left kentucky, and i could not drive faster than 65mph, because the valve train would sound like a diesel. i used a lot of rizlone on that trip, mybe like 4-6 qts. the car was alos weighed down alot.. i had the heads to my 302 in it, all of my personal belongings that i took to ky when i first went there, my computer, my clothes, everything except my 302 block, that was in my friend's truck

i dont know how i did it with such great gas mileage, if i hadnt figured it out i would not have believed it. i had better gas mileage than everyone who drove back home, there was 20 cars in my army guard unit that made the trip. i couldnt keep up with them all, so i was on my own.. but i passed everyone nearly every day. when they stopped to get gas, i was tucking on by them, and then a little while later, they would all cruise on past me and honk and wave and laugh at my "wonderful" paint job.

i am going to post a pic of the hood that we "fixed" up when we stopped at Texarkana on our trip across texas... look for it soon
