Probably one of these little cars:

It's not very often a novel is written about a car - let alone a 1971 Ford Maverick!

I discovered the existance of this story while surfing one night in cyberspace. A short novel written by Harry Crews that involved a 1971 Ford Maverick. It was no easy chore getting a copy - it has been out of print since the 70's and the only one I could find was one signed by the author for $100.00! A little pricey when I didn't really know what the story was about. Further investigation lead me to "Classic Crews" a collection of his short stories - including Car. For those of you who are interested the ISBN # is 0-671-86527-7 and it costs $15.00.

The novel is just over 100 pages long and here is the what it is all about:

This guy Herman is a little nuts. He works in an auto salvage yard and loves cars. He loves cars so much that he wants to eat one! That's right - eat an entire car, hood, bumper, fenders, the works! While in town one day he spots this beautiful 1971 Bright Red Ford Maverick at the local dealer and decides thats the one - that's the one he wants to eat.

Herman ends up making a deal with the owner of the car dealership to put on a publicity stunt. They will sell tickets to a show were Herman actually eats the car. It will take place of several weeks and Herman will eat a little bit every day. Of course FOMOCO hears of this and tries to get a court order to put an end to it but it doesn't work and the publicity stunt goes on.

Using a blow torch they start getting the car up into little pieces and Herman swallows them whole. At the beginning of the following days show the big attraction is when Herman "passes" the pieces into a metal pot - "ting" the audiance hears from behind the curtain and they applaud. Better still - they take the passed pieces and stamp them into mini-Mavericks that the audiance can buy!!!

No folks - I am not making this up. There is more to the story but this is the general plot. This book is rate PG-13 and has some swearing and sexual scenes in it - beware the kiddies!

Here's an excerpt from the book:

Everybody in the Southeast knew exactly how Herman planned to eat the Maverick, just as most of the people in the rest of the country did because, by now, the wire services had picked up the story. Mr. Edge was going through it all again because he knew the audience would never get tired of it, that they wanted the details and wanted them again. And so he told how the metal would be cut into half-ounce lumps, how the lumps would be sterilized, how the doctor had put Herman on a special soft diet to protect the stomach from the metal, how they would put the seat covers and windshield and other unswallowable matter into indigestible capsules, and how Herman would continue week in and week out, two shows a day - the evening to eat, the morning to pass (nervous giggles, irregular applause building into a storm of clapping, followed by shouts of Go, Herman Go!) until finally there would be nothing left of that Maverick car but a memory.

Mr. Edge raised his hands for quiet.

"And now a special announcement. As you know, Herman Mack will eat for the first time this evening at six."

    A roar of applause.

"In the morning, the first half-ounce he passes at nine-thirty will be auctioned off to the highest bidder."

Mr. Edge paused. There was utter silence. He could hear the doctor shuffling around behind him. The audience sat stunned. Mr. Edge rushd on.

"We have facilities here at the Hotel Sherman for melting down the half-ounce and casting it into the shape of a miniature Maverick - an absolute replica. And moreover, each subsequent half-ounce will be similarly melted down and cast into small cars with a hole through the top suitable for wearing on your key chains. These small cars will be sold at twelve dollars and fifty cents each plus state sales tax on a first come first served basis."

Or how about the original engineering manual telling the assembly-line how to assemble the car?

Considering it is about 100 pages it would probably cost more than $20 ... :)
