well i did what my youth in me said and i welded the spider gears... put it back in the car and whoo... there are no words to drscribe the diffrence between the old rear and the new.... at frist when i went to go it would act like it wanted to stall??? but at like 15 mph it would just thow you into the back seat... but yea it really does hamper your turning ability.. i have 255 70 15 on it and they rub.. but hay i know i'll have alot of fun at the track..
chris, what track are you going to race at? i'd like to know so i won't ever show up there. obviously you did not read the replies, from old guy and myself, in your other post. not only is the welding of the spider gears illegal and unsafe, it is plain STUPID. not only are you endangering your life but that of the car in the other lane. i just hope it will not be me or someone else from this board. and if your tires rub and the track officials notice, they will throw you out before you run again. please rethink what you are doing. if you are caught doing this, the next time to that track they willgo over your car with a fine tooth comb.
strange we ran a 66 fairlane with a 460 and welded up spiders for year's,and we never broke the weld or spiders. we did however break several axels, even twisted a few drive shafts, but we never hurt ourselves or any one else!!! i'm sorry i would have passed this post up but you said that it was "STUPID". just because you choose not to does not mean no on else should either. i'm sure in your past that you did somthing that others said you should'nt but you did it anyway thats just one way that you learn.
sorry robert, i can't think of anything that i have done that flagrantly breaks the rules at any track and that could possibly endanger others lives. the safety rules are put there for a purpose and yes they have developed them over a period of time by learning from others mistakes, such as the broken axles as you stated. what may have been accepted before has been changed due to many factors, more power, higher speeds, better tires, a lot more traction, etc. i did not use that word lightly and have never done so on the internet before. this young man asked for our opinions earlier. they were given and he was told the rule book states that this is not allowed in any class in the nhra. he chose to disregard these words of advice and said he plans to race this way regardless. i take safety seriously and hope for everyones sake he does too.
How does one know how well Chris can weld? It may let go the first time he goes to the line, jambs up, breaks an axle, crosses the line and nails the other guy! Never grow old, because when your young you know everything, when you older you loose it all.
please dont get me wrong i am not saying that welding the spiders is the right way to go. but i have seen alot of axels twist off on a full spool and mini's also. and cars swap lanes not just because of the car but because of loose nut's behind the wheels too. all i was saying was we all learn from our own experiences. and stupid is a very harsh word.
and don i did'nt mean at the track i just meant in life in general,i can remember pulling some pretty hairbrain stunts and praying now my children wont do the same thing's that i have in my past. all i was trying to say is all you can do is offer the advice and hope for the best.
