Would it be unwise to take a can of roof tar, break it down with some mineral spirits and paint the floor boards to protect them from rust?
Are there other home remedies for rust prevention in this area?

Mark; POR 15 is a very good paint to use for that purpose, as well as Bill Hirsch Miracle Paint. They are very thick, dry hard and are very durable and stop rust. Plus, when dry, they don't smell the way tar would. Give 'em a try.

Here is the link to POR15's website. I have bought some, but haven't tried it yet.
